But there was/is and issue with VSS, I assume you are referring to "previous versions". The "previous versions" tab can be missing if the DFS Root is on a drive where there is no VSS configured.
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/887189 There is a Hotfix there which I have not noticed before. I have used the workaround though.
