Active Directory without Clients registered in DNS
dtts 10/30/2008 10:28:01 AM
Hello,

I'm testing an Active Directory implementation for a Customer.
They want to use BIND for DNS. There will be about 4 Windows 2008 domain
Controllers in one Domain with several Sites.

Until now in BIND there is no Client registered and they want to keep this.

Is it supported to use Active Directory without registering the Clients in
DNS?

I think so.

Consider setting up DNS on one of the AD servers and having it use their
BIND server as the forwarder. Clients will register in the AD DNS servers
DNS.

Dear customer,

Thanks for posting here.

I agree with Danny said.

Meanwhile, here is some more information for your reference.

Suggestion:
===============

Since the Domain Name System (DNS) is the Active Directory locator in the
Windows 2000 and later AD domains. Active Directory clients and client
tools use DNS to locate domain controllers for administration and logon.

If you want to use BIND as DNS server, please know that the DNS server:

1. Supports the SRV RR (RFC 2052)

2. It would be best if it could support the dynamic update protocol (RFC
2136)

3. It would be best if it could support Incremental Zone Transfer (RFC 1995)

If you have already used the latest version of BIND, the above requirements
should be available.

Also, although it is supported to use Active Directory without registering
the Clients in DNS, we still recommend that you configure the client
computers to register their DNS records as well. In many cases, we may need
to locate the related client computers in the corporate network. For
example, to access file shares, network printers.

Hope it helps.
