msMpEng.exe

I'm running Windows XP Pro (SP3) with 3GB RAM , Intel Core2 2GHz CPU and
Windows OneCare installed.
Recently performance has slowed when running programs (esp MS Access with up
to 25 seconds to open screens).
This performance hit hasn't coincided with any program changes, except
(perhaps) the change of OneCare from the trial to licensed version.
I notice that MsMpEng.exe is running in Task Manager with memory usage
between 50,000 and 69,000 K.
I understand that this is related to Windows Defender, but can find no trace
of that program on my PC.
If I turn off the Virus and Spyware option in OneCare, MsMpEng remains (but
at a slightly reduced Mem Usage of 45000), but Access performance improves.

Am I right in assuming that if I have OneCare enabled with Virus and
Spyware, then I shouldn't need Defender?
Is MsMpEng part of Defender AND OneCare?
How can I stop OneCare slowing down my Access programs?

Thanks for the reply Steve.
Any ideas as to why OneCare should be slowing down an MSAccess application?

Thanks for the reply Steve. I'll try excluding that folder and see what
happens.
