File Server Best Practice
Kris <kpahel[ at ]gmail.com> 12/18/2008 3:30:26 PM
I have been tasked with cleaning up the file server for my
organization. Does anyone have a good source for learning the best
practices for this project. I think some of the issues I need to
address would be: duplicates, old files, organization and likely a few
I can't think of.
Thanks
Kris

Hi Kris!

We generally determine a date limit and delete everything before it.
Before, we send an e-mail to every user like: "netxt friday we are going to
delete all files older than xxx date, if you want to keep any file before
it, save it on your own hard drivers"

Off course we have must have a full backup before this procedure.

Hello Kris,

We use quotas on the folders and so the users required to cleanup themself.
We then provide archive space and copy the data to cd/dvd and store it in
a safe place. Ofcourse we run a dailey/weekly/month and yearly backup strategy.
So they can still get older data.

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

Thank you Meinolf. How do you enforce the quota?

This requires support from upper management in order to work.... Also,
at the Hospice I support, we do not allow any files saved on local hard
drives.
