DNS Server in 2008 not resolving some domains
Andrew Hodgson <me3[ at ]privacy.net> 11/27/2008 6:43:15 PM
Hi,

We have an SBS server running Windows Server 2008 DNS, using the root
hints to find the relevant domains.

We are finding that particularly some domains such as www.google.co.uk
are not resolving correctly with the DNS server, giving a server
failed response. When you clear the DNS cache everything is ok again.

Initially we thought the firewall may be blocking EDNS0 responses, but
this has been switched off on the firewall now, and also someone on an
SBS forum has confirmed that they are seeing this behaviour on a
similar system, but behind a firewall which does not use EDNS0
blocking.

Anyone any idea what may be causing this? I am going to have to look
into using Open DNS for the short term as I don't have accessible a
resolving DNS server, and can't have this one continually go down.

Andrew.

This issue is now with MS tech support as it is a confirmed issue with
Windows Server 2008 DNS implementation when using root hints.

Thanks,
Andrew.
