WINHTTP.dll error trying to run client diag
"C.Triplett" <chaztrip[ at ]gmail.com> 12/20/2008 3:31:12 AM
Hello, all I am newer to WSUS and this is frustrating... I have a new VM
Workstation that I just built. It is still at the RTM and it is added to
the domain fine and it is getting the right GPO to point it to the WSUS
server. I am wanting to test on it to deploy SP2 to it but it wont join the
WSUS collection. I try to run the client diag and I get the error
"application cant start becuse WINHTTP.dll was not found.

Cant I run Wsus against an RTM machine? Do I need to install SP2 on it for
it to see it?

Thanks

This is a true statement. There are *mandatory* updates that must be applied
to an XP RTM system before you can install Service Pack 2 from WSUS.

> Cant I run Wsus against an RTM machine?

Actually, no. The Windows Update Agent contained in an XP RTM machine is
incapable of talking to a WSUS Server. At a minimum you need to install
either XP Service Pack 1 directly, or the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
directly.

> Do I need to install SP2 on it for it to see it?

This would be another possible resolution.

See this article for an actual example of using WSUS to update an XP RTM
machine to XP SP2.

(Disclaimer: The article was originally written for a WSUS v2 environment.
Substitute references to the wuau22.msi installer with the
WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe installer; although wuau22.msi is still a
viable option - it just adds unnecessary steps to the process.)
