Outlook does not use an MX Record. Neither does the LAN in general. Normally there is no MX record locally at all,...it is only something the ISP needs to do for the sake of other mail servers out in the Public so that they know how to send mail to this mail server from the Internet.
Outlook is going to the wrong box because the "Name" for the mail server that has been given to Outlook is resolving to the wrong IP#. Exactly why that is happening I do not know,..but that is what is happening. The guy will have to give more details about the situation.
