Upgrading to R2 from Windows Server 2003 SP2
frank 12/30/2008 7:47:00 AM
We are in the process of upgrading our 2 node MSCS cluster with Windows
Server 2003 SP2, connected to IBM Storage via Fibre Channel, to Windows
Server 2003 R2.

My questions simply is:
Are there any issue installing R2 on top of SP2?

thank you very much and kind regards.

Hi Frank,

I upgraded more than 50 servers already to R2 all from sp2, also 2 failover
clusters but had no errors that can't be fixed.

In my case I had som errors with HBA drivers the drivers are old and had
nothing to do with SP2 or R2.
What I did with the cluster was failover to node 1 and update node 2 to R2 ,
failover to node 2 and update.

No problem's [ at ] all but remember if you server has problems you may solve
them first. And I can't say it to much always make a full backup or remove a
mirror disk etc.

a good fall back is sometimes handy ;-)

Re: Upgrading to R2 from Windows Server 2003 SP2
frank 12/30/2008 3:05:01 PM
But...now I see that there are 2 versions of Windows server 2003 R2.
One version is with sp1 included.
One version is with sp2 included.

We have the first one, Windows Server 2003 R2 with sp1 included (2 CDs)

Our Servers are already at SP2.

Can I proceed anyway with disc 2 of windows server 2003 r2 with sp1 included
in order to install FSR (File Server Resource manager) on top of my already
SP2 servers?

Please advise.

I'd recommend obtaining the SP2 integrated R2 release, so as not to
potentially "downgrade" your servers. I'd also recommend consulting your
TAM or Sales contact at Microsoft.
