Showing updates in WSUS
"chaz" <chaztrip[ at ]gmail.com> 12/21/2008 9:10:25 PM
Ok, so I have followed Lawrence's post and installed SP2 on my target
machine. So should it not report that it needs 87 updates? At least that
is what MBSA says it needs. Do you have to have an update approved before a
client will say it needs it? Should not the client just say hey... here are
the updates I need and I can go in and decide to approve them? Can I force
that to update to the WSUS console?

Here is my Client Diag for the target machine:

WSUS Client Diagnostics Tool

Checking Machine State
Checking for admin rights to run tool . . . . . . . . . PASS
Automatic Updates Service is running. . . . . . . . . . PASS
Background Intelligent Transfer Service is not running. PASS
Wuaueng.dll version 7.2.6001.788. . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
This version is WSUS 2.0

Checking AU Settings
AU Option is 4: Scheduled Install . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
Option is from Policy settings

Checking Proxy Configuration
Checking for winhttp local machine Proxy settings . . . PASS
Winhttp local machine access type
<Direct Connection>
Winhttp local machine Proxy. . . . . . . . . . NONE
Winhttp local machine ProxyBypass. . . . . . . NONE
Checking User IE Proxy settings . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
User IE Proxy. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . NONE
User IE ProxyByPass. . . . . . . . . . . . . . NONE
User IE AutoConfig URL Proxy . . . . . . . . . NONE
User IE AutoDetect
AutoDetect not in use

Checking Connection to WSUS/SUS Server
WUServer = http://*****
WUStatusServer = http://*****
UseWuServer is enabled. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
Connection to server. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
SelfUpdate folder is present. . . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS

Here is the GPO settings that I have for the test OU ::

"Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation" = ENABLED
"Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications" = NOT
CONFIGURED
"Automatic Updates detection frequency" = 1 hour
"Configure Automatic Updates" = Option #4/Scheduled Install Time:0000
"Delay Restart for scheduled installations" = ENABLED
"Do not adjust default option..." = NOT CONFIGURED
"Do not display ... option ..." = NOT CONFIGURED
"Enable client-side targeting" = ENABLED/TargetGroup:UnderConstruction
"No auto-restart..." = DISABLED
"Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations" = NOT CONFIGURED
"Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations" = ENABLED/Delay:1
minute

Only if the updates are within the product groups you have configured to
synchronies.

No but its metadata must be synchronizing.

Detection occurs in your configuration once an hour. Installation only at
midnight. You can force a detection using "wuauclt /detectnow" reporting in the
WSUS reports will be delayed by at least10 mins and usually somewhat longer.

No idea if the URL is correct though. Quite a significant minority of people get
it wrong.

There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.
Re: Showing updates in WSUS

Thanks Dave... My url is right I just put the stars in there.

Here is what I first did because I was not sure that it would download the
updates.... anyway yes I have the updates select by WSUS that I wanted..
ie.. critical, security...ect but I approved them all and relized that it
was going to download them all...... so I went through and declined all of
them figuring that the client would say... hey I need these updates and then
I could just go back and approve only those.

Under WSUS on this new client it shows that it does not need any updates
yet.... I know it needs over 80 of them. If I pick one that I know it
needs and approve it and set the deadline in the past then it will install
it on the client machine.

I just would like to have it show in WSUS that it needs these.

Thanks

Chaz,

It doesn't think it needs them because you declined all of them.

You need to change them to "Not approved", then it will detect whether or
not it needs them.

It doesn't download until you approve them for install.

If you wish to remove the content to save space you should run the cleanup
wizard while the updates are declined. Then change them from declined to not
approved. You will need to look into how long they must be declined for before
the wizard will remove them. I do not have access to WSUS 3 at home so cannot
look it up.

I think that might be the issue. I will check when I get back home
today and see if that works.

Thanks to all for the help
