Third domain controller
zeb2100 10/22/2008 5:09:17 PM
I am in the process of setting up a third domain controller for my domain,
and have a question about DNS. Should I make the third domain controller,
and if so, when should I install DNS? Thanks for any help.

Hi there, all dc's should have dns installed and an active directory
integrated DNS zones should be implemented. Install the Dns service then run
dcpromo to make it a dc and if your zones are AD integrated it/they will
appear in dns on the new dc.
Hope that helps
James.

Thanks for the info. That what I thought. Just one more question. Before
running dcpromo i should point the dns to one of the other dns servers that
has dns running on it? Thanks

You should do yes otherwise the server won't be able to find any SRV records
that specify dc's, gc's etc so wont be able to find the domain let alone join
it and become a DC.

You already have 2 DCs. Presumably, you already have existing DNS servers.
Before you promote the new DC, make sure that it is configured to use your
existing DNS servers in TCP/IP properties.

After that, it doesn't matter whether you do dcpromo first or install DNS
first.
