I recently found a problem with some clients on my LAN. The clients get addresses from DHCP, they are able to connect to the LAN/work, no problem. But when I attempt to ping their IP or host name both time out.
I issue the -a option to resolve addresses to host names, I get -- pinging hostname.X.X (fully qualitied name), shows the IP address, then.... times out.
What i did with a few clients I'm having trouble with is ---
I went to my DNS server, deleted their A record, went to their desktop, issued the ipconfig /flushdns, then ipconfig /registerdns both commands were successful.
I went back to my DNS server and saw they populated DNS again with their original leased DHCP address. I re-tried to ping host and IP and still no luck.
So far i came across 5 desktops where I can not ping. I try to ping them from my desktop, my servers, DNS server, no good. I can only ping them which at their desktops.
The desktops are all XP professional SP3, my servers are mainly 2003 SP2/few 2000 SP4 servers, DNS/DHCP/WINS are running on Server 2003 SP2.
Can someone help ---- as this is really confusing, why I can't ping IP or host name on some desktops. Nothing has changed with DNS.
I do greatly appreciate assistance in helping me resolve this issue.
Thank you, Bob

Hello Bob,
Do you have any firewall running? Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the DNS server and one client. What kind of zones do your run?
Best regards

Hi Bob,
like Meinolf already wrote, it sounds like firewall/routing. Are these clients in the same network segment (perhaps there's a router that doesn't allow ICMP)? Or the clients firewall refuses to answer pings.
Cheers! Jens

They "had" the windows XP SP2 firewall on, I turned it off - still same problems. The clients are on the same network segment, we have 1 facility all are on 192.168.0
Below is the result of pinging one host on the DNS server ---
