In what folder are Windows updates kept?

Gurus,

If you are a stand-alone computer and have Automatic Updates configured to
download (but not install) updates daily, in what folder are these updates
kept?

Follow-up question - how can I "force" this process to start right now
instead of waiting until 3:AM?

Regardless of whether you're a standalone AU client, or a WSUS client,
downloaded updates are always kept in the
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder.

If you have updates downloaded and pending installation, and you have a
Notification Icon in your taskbar, click on it, and it will open a dialog
box to permit you to install the updates interactively.

Ok, I've got a lot of files with no extension which look like this in that
folder:

34d822e0c61e0d8067f37ec0ed66a15343e1a58f

What are these?

That looks like the temp folder some installation routines might use. May
not have completed or had the permissions to clean up.

In context, it's more likely to be the updates themselves. WSUS keeps updates
in files with names similar to that.

While theoretically possible, running WSUS/WU/AU updates directly isn't
supported (AFAIK) so I wouldn't recommend it. Better to use the Windows Update
API to install them. For example, I have a script that downloads and installs
all available updates:

<http://www.scms.waikato.ac.nz/~harry/wsusupdate.vbs>

http://www.scms.waikato.ac.nz/~harry/wsusupdate.vbs

Harry.

Yes, that was the topic and what I meant.
