NSLOOKUP shows old domain controller IP address
mike11d11 <mike11d11[ at ]yahoo.com> 12/18/2008 12:37:11 AM
I'm getting some errors on a few client computers when logging in from
the event viewer. The are getting error 1053 saying user or computer
not found. Also message about not able to find domain controller. We
have removed and old 2003 SBS domain controller from the network and
now only have a windows 2008 and server 2003 standard machines as the
only 2 domain controllers left on the network. When i do a nslookup
for our domain on a machine i'm showing it still has the third IP
address of the old domain controller. I'm not sure where i need to go
in DNS to clean this up. Machines seem to be trying to connect to the
old domain controller and retrieve gpo's and I beleive DNS is the
issue. Any help is appreciated...

Hello mike11d11,

Check all zone properties, Name servers tab. Did you also cleanup AD sites
and services from the old servername?

Best regards

Under sites adn services i still see the old server listed there. It
doesnt have any settings under it like the NTDS Settings, its just the
server. I guess i can just delete that server from the list now. The
old server is just a member server on the domain now, would removing
it as a member server get rid of the listing? We do not use this
server right now for anything anymore.

Within DNS, i go to DomainDNSZones and a Host (A) record for the old
server. It also has a Host (A) record under the ForestDnsZones for
the old server as well. Should i just delete these or is there a
proper procedure for removing these from the Zones?

How was the SBS domain controller removed? Did you demote it using DCPROMO,
or manually unplugged it? If manually unplugged or blown away, you may also
need to do a Metadata Cleanup.

How to remove data in Active Directory after an unsuccessful demotion (of if
it failed, unplugged, etc):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

Also follow Meinolf's suggestions to remove it from Sites, Nameservers tab
in DNS properties, and anywhere in the SRV records. You can also cleanup the
SRVs by performing the following on each DC:

delete the system32\config\netlogon.dns and dnb files.
ipconfig /registerdns
net stop netlogon
net start netlogon
