Well I did the first stage and the comments that carried over from XP were there. I can edit them in a window that appears below the directory and filename panes. If I click on Properties|Details there is nothing there called Comments that I can edit. It seems there are certain filenames that will not allow comments. so far I have identified those to be *.rtf; *.pdf
another annoyance is that every filename pane in Windows Explorer must have the Comments column added. Is there any way to have the Comments column added to every filename pane of all directories? thanks for your help Gail
