Getting a new w2k3 r2 server
"ericwch" <u47841[ at ]uwe> 11/27/2008 7:27:29 AM
Hi all,

Currently, I have a NT 4.0 PDC server and my company allows me to buy a new
server to handle the increased workload. I have some qualms on integrating
this new server into my production environment. Because I need to maintain
the domain name , this is my plan :-

1. Get a PC to setup a BDC ( to migrate the users and computer accounts )

2. Promote the BDC to PDC ( naturally, the currently PDC will be demoted ).

3. Offline the new PDC and plug in the cable into a 4 port switch ( to be
shared with my new server
only )

4. Do an in-place upgrade to W2k ( because we have the PC with ram 256mb )

5. Run DCPROMO on that w2k.

6. Install w2k3 r2 on the new server and run dcpromo. ( I guess I have to run
the R2 upgrade using the
disc 2 on the w2k server first before doing the dcpromo)

7. Do a transfer of FSMO roles.

8. Plug in the new w2k3 r2 server into my production environment.

Is this the fastest way to get a new server into my working envirnoment ,
without using any software that needs me to pay?

Comments and advice please. If there are any better solution, please advice
too.

Thanks and regards.

Hello ericwch,

Even with windows 2000 server the minimum of RAM is 256MB. I would personally
not use this machine for upgrading. Think about buying additional RAM first,
at least again 256MB, better choose 1GB.

For your steps:
1. make sure that PDC and BDC are in sync BEFORE promoting and disconnecting.
4. see above
5. make sure that you have all drivers available, especially the NIC driver,
during the upgrade. When i did it some years ago i had to install the NIC
drivers before i could start with AD installation. Also make sure that DNS
is configured correctly with forward/reverse lookup zone and that the NIC
is configured for the preferred DNS to itself only. Then choose AD integratede
zones, so they will replicate with the other DC/DNS server automatically
and all DC/DNS are fully writable.
6. if you do not need the R2 features there is no need for the second disk.
Then you can install the new machine from the first one. Do not forget to
upgrade the schema on the 2000 with adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep
from the 2003 installation disk to version 30. If you need the R2 features,
then you have to upgrade the schema from the second R2 disk because this
extends the schema to version 31.
7. Also make the 2003 Global catalog server and see 5. about DNS

I did the upgrade in my environment in the same network without separating.
Just disconnect the NT4 BDC from the network so you have it in case of something
goes wrong.

Best regards
