I upgraded 2003 server to server 2008. I had issues that I could not resolve so I tried to downgrade the server back to 2003. Even though I had the Server 2003 setup program delete the old windows installation I can't install server 2003 to install properly or can I install the service pack. I get problems with files that can't be copied during setup (I used many different disk). I believe the problem is the "c:\users" directory. There is some kind of filer redirection that causes server 2003 to use the "c:\users" directory instead of "c:\documents and settings". Does anyone know how I can kill the c:\users redirection so I can install Server 2003 without formatting the disk so I can create a functional install?
Thanks John

Hello John,
How did you downgrade it? With reformatting the disk or without?
Best regards

Speculating I admit,...but I think the Drive structure has changed from 2003 to 2008 just like it changed from XP to Vista (hence why duel booting is so problematic). I don't think there is any "going back" without wiping out the partitioning and starting over.
Install 2008 back on the machine,...copy the valuables to a safe place (like USB Stick, USB HD, whatever works). Then wipe the partition and start over. Install 2003. Login with the correct accounts to create fresh profiles. Then copy the material back to the Documents and Settings/%profile% where it is supposed to be.

Hello, I am guessing this is the junction point for c:\Documents and Settings that points back to C:\users folder You would need to delete the junction point. Something like fsutil.exe Thanks, Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Why do you even need to keep the contents of C:\Users? This is a server not a workstation. There isn't supposed to be anything important kept within a user profile on a server, it should be kept anyplace else but that. There also isn't supposed to be a bunch of user profiles on a server.
Copy the contents to some other safe place (like an external USB harddrive),...then delete the partition,...create a new partition,...format,...load.
Copy the contents from the external drive into the correct profiles in "c:\documents and settings" after everything is done.
