Windows 2003 DNS integration with Windows 2003 SBS DNS
ngomes 10/17/2008 3:17:01 PM
I recently setup a new 2003 domain for let’s call it company A. Company A
is now going to merge with Company B & C. Company B&C are running on separate
windows 2003 SBS. Company A is hosting an application that is going to be
used throughout A, B&C. I have tried to setup DNS from each location by
setting up new forward lookup zones. The zones show up in the DNS as company
B look up zone but if I ping a PC in company b just by name it will not ping
unless I ping the FQDN. Any Ideas??

The best way of doing this is to use the DHCP server domain search
option which is option 119 in the DHCP server. If you add your other
domains to this option, you will be able to ping the machine by
hostname, and it will attempt to ping the hostname using the domain
suffixes found in the search list from the first to the last suffix.

I said best way, because currently I have the same issue, and am
unable to get the XP clients to look at this option, and so I am
looking at another way to distribute the domain search list to
clients.

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

wich SP is installed on your XP-clients? If it's SP3 then have a look at
this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953761

Perhaps that's the whole problem and you don't need to find other solutions.

Cheers!
