Event 5779 Netlogon - invalid site name
Library Sysadmin 12/15/2008 7:50:01 PM
We have been getting the following error on user devices when logging in.
The domain/site name is correct. DNS is AD Integrated. DNS has all the
containers and SRV records for the domain scdl.local. Two DCs for the domain
are Windows 2003 R2 SP2.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5779
Date: 12/15/2008
Time: 9:17:49 AM
User: N/A
Computer: <mycomputer>
Description:
The site name for this computer is 'scdl.local'. That site name is not a
valid site name. A site name must be a valid DNS label. Rename the site to
be a valid name.

I haven't found a lot of information about this error anywhere, or how to
resolve it.
Any insights would be appreciated.

TIA
Rick

Hello Library,

Do you have more then one site? Are AD sites and services configured with
the subnets and did you create the sites and move the DC's to there belonging
site?

Best regards

What OS is this "<my computer>"?
Its it a MAC OS? ....an older MAC OS?

Mac's are common in Libraries and schools,...I take it by your "name" this
is a Library.

Why am I asking? Because some (most?) of the Mac OS's will not acknowledge
a FQDN if the TLD is more that three characters long. You TLD is
"local",...that is 5 charaters. There may be similar issues with other Os's
as well but I have no specific list to give you.

Yes, I am aware that the Small Business Server installation Wizards really
try to "push" you into using that as the TLD but it is a *bad* idea. I
always use a three character TLD such as "loc" for local (eg. "scdl.loc")

No.
We've only had the one site in AD - which has always been the
Default-First-Site-Name - it's been about 7 years, now.
AD Sites and Services does have the IP subnets that we use defined.
There are 2 domain controllers for the site.

This error started showing up in the late summer and I haven't been able to
find much info on it or how to fix it.

Phillip,

Most of our PCs are Windows XP SP3 - maybe 200 or so. We have 5 loaded with
Vista Ultimate that we used to evaluate the OS.

Yes, both DCs are in the same site and subnet.
