Reliability Update (KB936357)?
"TJD" <TJDanon[ at ]cox.net> 6/26/2007 1:13:55 AM
Does anyone know about this (6/11/07) Microsoft update that is supposed to
improve reliability with Vista and Intel processors. Should I apply this
update? It has not been included in Vista's "Windows Update" list, but is
available on Microsoft's download site:

I would like to know the same thing. I just installed the most recent
patches and restarted my computer and a few minutes later the emergency "keep
it from overheating fan" turned on. (My case has two fans.) I have never had
that happen before and the fan would not turn off without me powering down.

Is this hotfix to address that problem? Is it to address a different
problem, perhaps one that I haven't had? Is it to fix a problem that is a
mystery even to the people who write the documentation?

Not only do you not give any details about the problem that it is intended
to fix, but it repeatedly uses the term "reliability update" and has a link
near the end that says to go there for more information on the terminology.
Of course, that term isn't listed.

This is a hot fix and thus is not included in windows update yet. That makes
it seem like it is an emergency. If it is an emergency, TELL ME WHAT IT IS
FOR. I am not your beta tester and I will not install random hotfixes to my
computer that come with documentation that doesn't even say what it fixes.

It seems like it is supposed to be a "processor reliability update"
thing, as Intel never has any bugs or anything in their chips.

Yes, and that article uses as its only source, the same document that I am
stating has no details about the problem. Neither of them say anything
besides "this is a reliability update."

Yeah, great. It's a reliability update. That doesn't tell me anything about
it at all.

This is a fix for the processor and as such, I want to make an informed
decision about whether to install it now or wait until it is more fully
tested. I can not make that decision based on the extremely vague claim that
it is a reliability update. A reliability update to correct WHAT PROBLEM?

That is what I need to know before I can make an informed decission about
whether or not to install it. Other people may install patches willy-nilly
but I do not update the code for my CPU without knowing why and only a few
days after release.

Well, I am one of those that installs patches "willy-nilly" (and I like to
live on the edge), so I installed this one. It installed fine and I don't
notice any difference in my computer (good or bad). When I read the article
link in this thread, I found my processor on the list. Also, this is a
legitimate Microsoft patch. Since it is listed with other updates, I figure
I can always uninstall it.

So you are suggesting that there is a problem with Intel's processors?
Surely not! :-)

Seems like nobody wants to tell you about any problems. They are
possibly so embarassed that they are now speachless. Or the reliablity
issue (which is not a bug) is somehow exploitable in some way, so its
hush hush.
