Big problem with windows 64bit install-please help
"hamsat" <hamsatuk[ at ]hotmail.com> 4/25/2007 8:54:08 PM
Hi and thanks for taking the time to look at my plea for help.
My problems all started when one morning I went to start up my computer
running Windows XP Pro 64 bit, and all it did was to get as far as the
screen where the bar goes back and forth and then re-boot without going any
further. Checked on the web for various ways's to try and sort this problem
out but did not manage to solve the problem. At this point I decided to
just re-install Windows, and guess what it got so far and started to do the
same thing loop. So I decided to back up as much as I could to my second
hard drive but due to it smaller capacity was only able to do so much. The
software I used to do this was Paragn Drive Back and the program was run
form within a dos environment. All went well and the plan was to start the
windows install again only this time to re-format the offending hard drive.
Now what happens is the windows install CD says that there is no drive
available to install it on. I have checked this out by running the repair
option" R" and am able to see a C: drive with all my folders, files and a
windows folder. Can anybody help me to get my system up and running again?
Thank you
Tony

Please provide some details about the system. The chances are that you need
a driver for your hard drive to be seen by the install. This is true for
most SATA controllers on x64, and all "RAID" IDE controllers.

You need to get the drivers for your controller - most likely from the mobo
manufacturer - and put them on a floppy. Then, when the setup program first
starts as you're booting off the CD - press F6 when prompted. From there be
patient and then follow the prompts to load the driver off your floppy
drive.

It would seem your HD is a SATA drive and you need to feed a Floppy with the
SATA drivers on it to the installation - the first thing that happens when
the install routine starts is at the bottom of the screen it asks you to
press F6 if you have any SCSI drivers to add to the installation. You may
think you don't but my guess is you do. If you cannnot locate your floppy
that was used the first time there is likely a utility on the System CD with
the Motherboard Drivers that prepares a floppy for you. From then on, it
should be rolling. If you don't have any SATA HD's you need to give us a
description of that machine and the Hardware.

That is good news, and remember that anytime you put that Installation
CD/DVD in a drive it cannot see those drivers. So, a simple repair requires
you to have that Floppy ready each time!

Vista apparently rectified this with a completely new Installer, so in six
month's time nobody will remember any of that old stuff anymore.
