Can someone send the URL for a supported hardware list for x64? I can't find it. Alternatively, if anyone knows of a DVD-RW drive that has x64 drivers already please point it out -- my Sony DVD-RW, unfortunately, does not and Sony Support seems oblivious to the need to provide 64bit drivers.
Thanks, -- TB

If this is Windows XP x64, there are no "supported" DVD writeable drives. If it's Vista 64bit, then it should be natively supported. Your Sony should work fine in either, with the appropriate application. In the case of XP x64, since the OS itself knows nothing about DVD writeable drives, you need to use a third party program, such as Nero, to use your drive. In Vista 64bit, it should work fine without additional drivers using the native Vista tools. Again, for advanced functions, however, you'll need a third party application.

I have the Nero (6.0 OEM Version) that came with the drive, a Sony DRU-820A. However, the hardware is simply not recognized at all by XP x64. It does not show up in the Device Manager even after explicitly scanning for new hardware changes.

Thomas: I'm currently using Nero 7 with XP x64 & Vista x64. Going on memory Nero 6.4 or 6.5 started support for XP x64. Have a great day.

The problem is that your Nero is too far out of date. You should be able to download a free update to 6.6.0.15a, which was the final 6.x release, I think. That release should support x64. If you're not moving to Vista, I'd recommend staying with that version - 7.x is bloat ware, IMHO.

I had a strange situation in which my 109 Pioneer suddenly disappeared from XP64 after installing SP2, but still showed up in the Bios, and the device manager. SO I put in a SATA DVR-212D Pioneer, well that one also showed in the BIOS and in Device manger but not in windows explorer or in disk manager, so I added an IDE Pioneer 111, that also shows in the Device manger but not in manager, nor in my computer.
I uninstalled SP2 and Nero essentials, but the situation still is the same.
I have one SATA HDD as a secondary drive and one PATA as the boot drive, I also have a USB external drive. They work fine. I also have several USB Card readers that work correctly.
I have tried all sorts of combinations of drives conneceted and disconnected, including a boot drive and one DVD. NOTHING will allow the DVD to show up so I can use it. I tried installing new drivers and it just says I have the best driver for the device I have. I even deled teh upper and lower filters, then the OS will not come up.
I checked all over the net but can't find much to help. Hope someone out there can help.

Have your read the KB at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us
It's about the UpperFilters and LowerFilters in the registry causing problems like you describe.
