Xp x64 start bar and desktop do not load
McGergs 5/12/2007 6:18:00 AM
Hello,

I just installed Windows XP x64 Professional on my Asus L1N64-SLI WS
motherboard with one AMD Athlon 64 FX 74 processor. Everything loaded up
great. I loaded the Asus RAID drivers using floppy disks I made from the
install disks. Once I got to my desktop I installed the rest of the drivers
on the install disk and now when I reboot, it does not load my start bar or
my desktop icons. I only can hit cctrl+alt+delete to get my task manager. It
shows that everything seems to be hunky dorey. It does not go past that
point. Just sits there.

I finally gave up and reloaded the whole system. Before this I downloaded
and updated to the latest BOIS. I isntalled service pack 2 for XP x64. Did
all my windows updates. Then I installed the drivers one by one. The last
driver I installed was the latest SMBus driver provided by Asus. I think that
is what fubared it. because the computer restarted fine untill after that.
Has anyone run into this issue before? I just want my start bar and desktop
icons back. I can't even hit windows+E to explore. All I can do is hit
ctrl+alt+delete to see my task manager. Now I can start in safe mode just
fine. I tried to uninstall the SMbus drivers but to no availe it didn't work.

Sounds like you've done a good job of identifying the problem driver. You
can try a system restore to a point before you installed this driver. Or,
given that this is a new system, I'd be sorely tempted to just start over
again. It's a pain, but may be the simplest if uninstalling the driver
doesn't work. I'd also let Asus know there's a problem with the driver,
though I'm not confident that they'll do much.
