What am I meant to do with the Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP
Professional disk, and what does it do within the system??

You store the disk in a safe place along with the Product
key and use it if needed to reinstall the OS. This
information is posted on the web site and it was also in the
email I received after purchasing a Genuine Advantage Kit.

It doesn't do anything within the system if you changed the
Product key as directed when you purchased the kit.
Otherwise, you use it to install the Windows XP Professional
operating system on your hard drive.

If you say so, Theo - I'm inclined to go over all that again. When someone
sells me a product and then tries to sell me another product and calls it
'Advantage' anything, I try and look for that advantage. I didn't study it
that much, but I also couldn't see any apparent advantage - not to me, that
is. I confess, I was totally blank as to what that was supposed to do or how
to implement it - and as I said, what the advantage actually consisted of.
The question makes sense to me.

Isn't this strictly targeted at corporate and business installations?

I think the Genuine Advantage is intended for individuals.
I had purchased a copy of Windows about 2 years ago and when
I tried to get updates I was told my copy of Windows was not
Genuine and taken to a page to purchase the kit. Microsoft
provides you with a new Product key and a utility to change
it in your current setup. A couple of weeks later I
received a CD that said it was my Genuine Advantage Kit.

This was with an OEM copy of Windows XP Pro that apparently
counterfeit. My uncle had the same thing happen in Alaska
where he had purchased a computer from a local shop. He was
getting updates for at least 1 year and then one day he got
the notice his windows was not genuine.

Oh well - that is making sense now. I guess people after buying a PC can
find themselves with a pre-installed system that they cannot verify the
origin of, or control how many others are activating.

Thanks for making that clear!
