NVidia RAID&SATA updates
Carlos 6/22/2007 3:54:05 PM
Has anyone tried the NVidia RAID & SATA updates that showed up today as
"optional" in Windows update (Vista x64)?
If someone did it, what version are they?

I've been running these for a couple of days. Only difference I see is the
BIOS recognizes the SATA DVD drives sooner. Raid Controller shows driver
5.10.2600.824 dated 12/23/2006.

Hope this helps

Reyede:
Thanks for the info.
Those drivers were published on May.
I was wondering if the ones that showed up today were newer.
Those ones had the re-activation issue (Vista had to be reactivated after
installing them)

I ran the update earlier and it forced me to restart. Now while Vista is
booting up it gives me a brief BSOD after loading nvrd64.sys & nvstor64.sys.
My Pc restarts and I have tried restarting in Safe Mode and tried restoring
previous good configuration, but nothing works. I get the same BSOD and my
system restarts. I had to install XP 64 on spare HD to get access to the net.
Currently my Vista OS is dead and I don't want to reformat and reinstall if I
don't have to.

If anyone can help to fix it, then I would in your debt.

Cheers

Carlos:
I installed the update on 2 NF4 systems. The SATA driver was
5.10.2600.824 dated 12/23/2006, which didn't change. The raid controller
went from 5.10.2600.822 dated 10/3/2006 to 5.10.2600.824 dated 12/23/2006.
The Vista x64 running on raid required a reboot, the Vista x64 running on
SATA didn't require a reboot. The activation wasn't effected on either
system, but I haven't had any activation problems with Enterprise. Have a
great day.

Thanks everybody for the time you have taken in answering me.
These "new" drivers are still older that the official Nvidia's released in
February, version 5.10.2600.931
I'll keep the 931's and skip this update from MS.
Carlos
P.S.: Dennis: How are you doing? What were the results of your analysis due
late May?

The results were good and bad. The good news, no new cancer, next

degradation due to too many years of abuse when I was young. Currently
trying to regain energy and appetite since gall bladder removal last month.
Have a great day.

Try running a system restore from your install DVD. Should work fine if you
didn't kill the restore points when you installed XP. Hope you were careful
and unplugged the Vista drive.

Hi there John,

Thnx I will try that and let you know if it worked. I did unplug my Vista
drive when I installed XP64, switching booting drives in bios.

Thnx in advance.

Hi again, as my luck would have it the install cd didn't find any restore
point. This is weird since I created one just before I updated the drivers
and since I installed XP64 with my Vista drive unplugged.

I'm now lost and don't know what to do to get Vista running again.

The BSOD STOP:0x0000007B happens just after these drivers load.

Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\nvrd64.sys
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\nvstor64.sys

Again any help regarding this matter will be much appreciated.

Last and wild resort.
Download the "good" drivers from Nvidia.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce4_amd_winvista64_15.00.html
Here's the file you want to download: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/15.00/nforce4_amd_winvista64_15.00_english_whql.exe
Unpack it (I use WinRAR for these operations).
Go to the \IDE\WinVista64\sata_ide
There you will have a "good" nvstor64.sys
Try copying it directly to the Vista hard disk, replacing the faulty one.
Do the same with nvrd64.sys, located in
\IDE\WinVista64\sataraid

Good luck!
Carlos
P.S.:Post back your results!

The first time you start XP with the Vista drive attached, the restore
points are deleted. What error message do you get with the stop code? What
kind of video card are you running? Are you running SLI? I would suggest
you search the Microsoft Knowledgebase with your error code and see if any
of the responses seem to fit your circumstances. The two drivers listed
would be the last successfully loaded. If it is a driver problem (which it
would seem not to be) the next driver would be the one you need to
replace/delete. You should be able to boot to safe mode it it is a driver
problem.

Re: NVidia RAID&SATA updates
Hunted 6/24/2007 10:29:01 PM
Hi guys,

After a whole weekend of trying loads of thing I did manage to get Vista
running again.

Carlos, I actually did the exact thing you mentioned earlier, even before I
read your post, but I took another path, which I never thought of.

I reckoned it must be something to do with the raid controller so I decided
to disable the raid controller and run the SATA drives as IDE detected ones.
(If that is even possible). I then choose Safe mode and behold it booted up
in Vista. I then restarted in normal mode and it worked again.

I only then got the message that the windows update was successful, but
immediately did a rollback on the drivers installed. It showed 2 Nvidia SATA
controllers. I restarted and enabled my RAID/SATA and it booted up again. I
then installed the driver 15.00 package and restarted again with another
successful boot.

So it's working, but what I'm not sure of now is if the driver I installed
is working or not, meaning I don't see any raid/sata functions on my PC and
my HDD is very noisy/active at the moment.

Thanks to both you and John for the help so far. Very much appreciated.

Re: NVidia RAID&SATA updates
Carlos 6/24/2007 11:29:01 PM
Hunted:
Go to Device Manager.
Expand the "Storage controllers" category (I am translating what I see from
Spanish into English so there may be a slight difference in this explanation)
You should have there
NVIDIA nForce RAID controller
NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA controller
Right click in any of them, choose Properties and then go to the Controller
tab.
If the NVIDIA drivers installation was successful, you should be seeing
version 5.10.2600.931
If it isn't then you will have to update them manually via the update driver
method.
Regards.
Carlos

Re: NVidia RAID&SATA updates

Hi Carlos,

Again thank you for you help.

I checked the device manager, but I only have NVIDIA nForce RAID controller
under the Storage solution and nothing about the NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA
controller, nowhere in the Device manager btw. I guess this is wrong though
and that it must be there somewhere.

I'm relative OK with my knowledge regarding systems, but Raid/SATA
controllers and the functions of it confuses me. I would have thought if
everything worked like it should I would have had the option to disable a
drive as I pleased, but I don't see that anywhere.

I'm just worried that my system is not running 100% efficient, because of
some issue with the storage drivers.
