Issue with increasing RAM
Jolson72 5/4/2007 5:53:01 AM
Recently I built a computer and purchased Windows Vista. I'm running the 64
bit version. To start with I had 1 GB of PC2 - 6400 RAM. My mother board
has 4 slots for RAM and is expandable up to 8GB of RAM. So I went ahead and
purchased 4GB (2 x 2GB) of the same type of RAM to upgrade my memory go 5GB.
However When I put in all 5GB of RAM windows will act like it's booting up
but then the screen will shut off but the computer will still be running. If
I take out the 1GB and just leave the 4GB of new RAM it still won't work. If
I take out one of the 2GB sticks of RAM and leave in the 1GB and the 2 GB for
a total of 3GB's of RAM then windows will work fine. For whatever reason
windows will only allow me to use 3GB's of RAM, nothing more. I was under
the impression that Windows Vista x64 could handle more RAM then that? Any
thoughts or ideas about what might be going on?

Thanks,

Jason

Check for a BIOS update. I have a similar issue on an Asus board. I can
run 3GB but not 4GB or more.

I have a similar issue, 4gb will not run effectivly, eg, areo stalls and
crashes as do games. I think the issue is related to Vista as the issue is
not present when I dual boot into XP 64. I have found by using my 4*1 gb ram
sticks and telling Vista I have less memory ( max is 3.25 gb) in system
config and advanced boot options, I am able to boot and get no stalls and
reasonable performance. Hopefully MS will release a fix for the issue.

I'm running 4GB with an ASUS board and Vista Ultimate 64 bit with no
problem whatever.

Check your BIOS - some motherboards need to have the North Bridge
configuration changed (happens with Asus P5B boards definitely and others
possibly). There is a setting called Memory Remap Feature in the North
Bridge section - this must be enabled for 64-bit OS's and should allow you to
see all the memory which you have installed.
