64-32it networking
Sphynx 6/30/2007 11:36:02 AM
I have one pc with vista ultimate 64bit and another with xp home 32bit. So
far I have been unable to connect the two to create a network. Does ne1 know
if it's possible to connect such different OS's?

If so, how? (assume i know nothing about networking ;) )

Thanks.

There's no incompatibility between 64-bit and 32-bit that would cause your
problem. Therefore, look to basic network troubleshooting. One place to look
for basic home networking troubleshooting steps are some of the older
Windows ExpertZone columns I did. There are also several MVP networking
sites. Finally, there are several newsgroups around networking. Probably a
good place to start would be
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing.

I can't tell you what your problem is but I have the same setup, my
desktop is running Vista Ultimate 64 and my laptop is running XP home.
I connect the two with a wireless router and it works fine so yours
WILL work, it just may take some fooling around.

Are you using a wired or wireless network?

Well - I enabled all the required settings for the two pc's including the
necessary firewall settings - but my problem probably lies in the basics.
E.g. Do both need to have the same workplace name? Can I plug the network
cable directly into each pc or do i have to go via my ADSL modem/router?

I have alot of experience with windows based pc's but this is the 1st time
in my life i've ever tried to network them. I've tried a number of different
combinations regarding settings and hardware connections but its till a
no-go.

There's gotta be a hot-to manual on the web somewhere complete with
necessary settings and all. Just gotta track it down...

The same workgroup name and each computer must have it's own computer
name.

I go through the router, I *think* you can plug direct, not absolutely
sure but for both the share the network connection you need to use the
router.

The first time I tried I found the help files on the computer worked,
they were a bit confusing and it took me a couple of tries but it did
work out eventually so keep trying.
