Currently i am running Windows XP 32 Bit on a:
Core Duo 2 6600, 1 GB Ram and Gigabyte GA-965p-s3 motherboard.
I am wondering if my system is compatible with 64 bit? Also will it run better? If anyone is using similar/same system configuration what are they experiencing?
Thx

Mine is one opinion of many you'll probably receive. Unless you're going to upgrade to > 4 gig of RAM, or intend to run 64 bit applications, there is little to be gained from running the 64 bit version. Your hardware, assuming you meant Core 2 Duo, is 64 bit.

First of all XP Pro x64 is only an alternative version of XP Pro, not a new one.
You have not said what programs and tasks you use your computer for. No one can advise you without that.
All Core 2 cpus are 64bit. However, 1 GB of ram is unlikely to be enough for you to take advantage of x64 strengths. There is nothing wrong with running with 1GB, but you will not see any difference in how software runs. Your software will run the same as it does on x86. All the XP Pro x64 users I have talked to run at least 2GB.
There are some driver issues that cause some devices and software not to work so you need to ensure that your devices all have 64bit drivers before proceeding. My suggestion, since you have not said why you think 64bit is for you, is that you stay with x86.

I see that all of the opinions expressed so far have been quite "conservative". Nothing wrong with that. I am going to express one a bit less so.
I doubt if you will have problems with hardware or, more specifically, drivers for you hardware. That which you mention is all recent. However, best to check on the MoBo maker's web site to make sure. Also, make sure all your needed and wanted applications are recent. Thorough checking pays great dividends in the form of avoided incompatibilities.
1 GB of RAM is OK but not enough to get maximum benefit. It is sufficient for a good experience but you would find 2 GB to be much better. Others have suggested 4 GB and they are certainly correct if you tend to have multiple, memory-intensive applications in use at once or if you do something such as edit large video files.
I have two boxes with 2 GB and one working with 1 GB. All work well for their intended tasks. I do expect to bump one box up to 4 GB soon.
In summary, the system is native 64 bit. Use a 64 bit system. Be part of the demand driving things forward! 64 bit XP is great but 64 bit Vista is awesome.

Unless you have a specific need to run a 64-bit only program, you're probably better with 32-bit XP with that system. Theo has pointed you at the whitepaper, and I agree with the others about RAM, etc. Though I did run XP x64 Edition for nearly a year on this Acer Ferrari with only 1GB. And was quite happy with it. But was it faster/better than if I'd been running XP 32-bit? No. And even now with 2GB in the laptop I don't see any difference in raw speed over 32-bit Windows. But that's not the only consideration, for me.

I'd probably want to install Inventer 11 on it (unfortunately it can't run with vista), I will definately be running Pinnacle Studio 10, Photoshop and a few other multimedia programs.
Ram wise, should i upgrade to 2GB if i plan on getting 64bit then?
I'll definitely get the 64bit drivers before proceeding. thx for advice

I would get additional ram because of Photoshop.
