You can not download Win XP Home. AFIK if you lost the CD you have to purchase another one. If the OS came preinstalled on your computer, you may be able to get a recovery CD from the manufacture.

1. You cannot "download" any Windows OS unless you have an MSDN subscription 2. You have an OEM version - contact your Vendor for a replacement disk.

Wouldn't have to be an OEM. Read the label on your case & see if it has OEM on it or not. If you're in Australia I'll soon burn a copy & send for postage. Gees, it's only a backup & not the reg key you know. I can't believe the MS cops can be so ............... Local comp shop'll probably do it for a buck. (or 2)

Once again your reply shows a lack of knowledge about Windows and computers in general. No one is being an "MS cop". We all know that the Product Key is the license, not the physical media. However, physical media must match the version of XP installed on the computer; i.e., XP Home-Pro-MCE Retail, XP Home-Pro-MCE OEM, etc.
In addition to the operating system itself, most machines from large OEMs such as Dell, HP, etc. have bundled software. A generic, or even branded, OEM will not restore the OP's computer to factory condition if the OEM used the Recovery Disk method. The OP may be unpleasantly surprised to find s/he doesn't have Word installed afterwards.
To the OP:
If you purchased the computer from a large OEM, you should contact them for replacement of recovery disks. This will be far less expensive than purchasing another copy of Windows and will ensure that you get any bundled software and drivers that originally came preinstalled.
If you don't have this sort of machine or can't do this for some reason, see this link for replacing missing retail XP install CDs:
How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246
Another possibility is to borrow an install CD from a friend. It must match the version you have installed. Afterwards, don't forget to install the drivers and any other third-party programs you need.
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Reinstalling_Windows - What you will need on-hand
One more option would be to take the machine to a local computer professional (not your version of BigStoreUSA/GeekSquad) and have them reinstall Windows. Most shops (like mine) have a collection of branded OEM install disks along with generic OEM install disks to use for this purpose.

There is no link from which one can legitimately download WinXP Home. You need to contact your computer's manufacturer to obtain a replacement for the CD you lost.

Hugely inflated hardware requirements??? I ran the hardware compatibility test and need no hardware changes. My machine predated SP2. If you must buy an operating system why not opt for the latest? Why are you so CERTAIN you won't get Vista in your next machine? If you had 98 would you say you would not go to XP? Perhaps Vista will be the only available OS when you get your next machine. ??????????? "Gordon" <gbplinux[ at ]gmail.com.invalid> wrote in message news:ODfDrG9wHHA.1204[ at ]TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl...

And has it got at LEAST 1GB RAM, preferably 2GB?
And if it predates SP2 then I would think that the processor is not up to date either - you'll find it like treacle......

Firstly XP Pro is going to be supported until 2014 - that's loads of time for some of the raging vista bugs to be sorted - secondly most non-commercially used machines last for that length of time so there's no incentive to buy new, and the OPs current machines XP will run FAR better than Vista will....and so will all the peripherals like printers....
Maybe in 2014 Windows (of any flavour) WON'T be the main global OS at all, ever heard of Linux?

Yes it has more than 1gig, and the processor is 3.2 GHz Pentium4. Whether or not the OPs machine will run better is only your opinion. It would be far better to stick to facts than emotions. Vista regardless of your emotions is the latest OS. "Gordon" <gbplinux[ at ]gmail.com.invalid> wrote in message news:unaonM%23wHHA.4172[ at ]TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl...

Oh dear you ARE brainwashed aren't you? Just because it's the latest certainly does NOT mean it's the best, or the most suitable for the OPs needs....just like Betamax was superior to VHS, but VHS was pushed by the vendors for their own ends....

Not necessarily. What would you do if you had $50,000 worth of older software that would not run on Vista? I know of doctors who have medical imaging equipment that works perfectly well and that would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to replace. Those older machines run on DOS and Windows 95 and these folks have little choice but to try to keep their old operating systems running! The same goes for some folks who have older very expensive scientific equipment. Less drastic than that are the folks who have less expensive software, like say earlier versions of AutoCad, those older versions will not run on Vista, and replacing them would cost an "insignificant" couple of thousand dollars. Would you jump to Vista so quickly if it were you who had to pay the paltry $2,000? People have all kinds of reasons for not wanting to migrate to a newer or different operating system. Some of those reasons may only be emotional or philosophical or plain silly, but other reasons are or may be very valid.

We, at least me, are referring to one individual who had a HD crash and couldn't 'verify' his copy of the OS. I.E. He had to purchase an HD and an OS. He bought XP. I simply asked why he didn't opt for Vista. Having worked for a company with thousands of computers I am fully aware of the costs of changing OS's. Very simply, if an individual MUST buy a HD and OS why would he choose XP instead of Vista???? Because, oh ye of little comprehension, his SOFTWARE may not work with Vista, his PERIPHERALS may not work with Vista, his computer might not be up to spec for running Vista AND applications as well, and he may not be able to afford to replace any of that other than the HDD and the OS. No-body. Your attitude "it's the newest so it's the best" is WRONG and gets up my nose. Go away and grow up.
|
|
There you go again, trying to impress someone. You sure are impressing me----negatively. Nowhere have I said it's the newest so it's the best, I asked a simple question, that is all. If that gets up your nose, get a nose job. Quit trying to impress everyone. It is a negative trait you have. I might say to you to 'grow up', but I don't know your age so I'll just say get a life and learn how to control your emotions.
