friggin defrag won't frig or frag!
LudDave 6/15/2007 1:21:00 AM
Every time I try to defrag (WIN XP SP2), I get a message when I click
"Analyze" that chkdsk /f is scheduled to run, with a request to run it. I
try, but it cannot run because the volume is in use. (This is where the
Luddite part comes in): Why all of a sudden does it do this? As far as I
know, I've changed nothing. I'm at my desktop and nothing is running (except
Norton? could that be it?). How do I find out what is running. So many
questions...

Thanks

Hello Mr. Ludd

Have you restarted the computer. chkdsk /f won't run inside Windows.
It should run on the next startup, just before Windows loads.
Go to Start => Run and type in "cmd" {without the quotes}
In the Command Window, type in chkdsk /f {without the quotes}
Type Y for yes to run it in next boot.

I had the same issue some months ago...it was a ZoneAlarm update that mucked
up the Disk Mgt thingies in Windows XP on my PC. I had to get another
firewall.

1. Reboot your computer so that the CHKDSK /F command will complete
on the restart.

2. If the problem persists reboot the computer into Safe Mode and try
running Defrag from there.

3. If you are unable to get Defrag to run even in Safe Mode then go
to the hard drive manufacturer's web site, download their free
diagnostic test software, and run that to check out the hard drive for
possible defects or failures.

Good luck

Thanks, Ron, but I believe you missed one crucial point... the Luddite part.
Maybe not a luddite, but certainly too old to have grown up with these
things, and the 'kids' who staff help desks would rather tell than teach.

How do I reboot into safe mode? XP professional doesn't give me an
opportunity to select safe mode before windows loads. I've searched MS site
and can't hit on the answer.

To boot to Safe Mode:

Start boot-up process, and hit F8 intermittently
every second or so. A long menu will appear
including Safe mode. Use up/down arrow keys
to scroll to Safe Mode and then Enter. Wait patiently.
