Restoring default name to DVD-RAM Drive
"kandinsky63" <rharaburda[ at ]tiscali.co.uk> 7/1/2007 10:23:49 PM
Hi

I have 2 DVDRW's both NEC + same model. In 'My Computer' under 'Removable
Storage devices' one of the DVDRW's shows the correct default name of
'DVD-RAM Drive' when empty and 'CD Drive' when it contains a blank DVD.

However, my other DVDRW, has mysteriously acquired the name 'SD PHOTOS'
that I previously gave to a USB removable storage device and is always
displayed whether the DVD drive is empty or contains an blank DVD. It does
however, show the title of a movie DVD.

How can I recover this drives default name?

Also, since both drives are exactly the same, how can I alter the names of
the drives in order to distinguish one from the other.

Can someone please help?

Thanks

Try rt clicking MyComputer>select Properties>Hardware>Device
Manager>DvD/CD Drives. Rt click on each one and
choose Uninstall. Restart and let XP reinstall them.

In control panel, do you have 'add hardware'?

_____

Each drive each has a letter that does not change, whether or not media is
in the drive. This distinguishes the drives. Two drives can not have the
same letter designation.

I've never seen the problem you have in terms of an old volume name from a
different removable media drive remaining when a new removable media drive
is empty (or at least never considered it a problem.) You might try
changing the Drive letter of the offending drive. Or you just might leave
it alone. The drive letter can be changed with 'Disk Management' in
'Computer Management' in 'Adminstrative Tools' (right click on the drive.)
