Open With
"MarkC" <None[ at ]nospam.com> 6/18/2007 5:46:48 AM
Using XP Pro SP2

Where is the OPEN WITH folder (if one exist) located in the directory? Or
is it in the registry? Why I ask, is that when I right click on a jpg file,
a choice comes which has OPEN WITH Painter. I checked within that
application to see if there was a preference setting and could not find one.
So I was wondering if there is a way to remove it manually.

Thanks, Mark

You can easily change what program opens jpg files by right clicking on the
file, select Open With and then Choose Program. Pick whatever program you
want to use and check the box "Always use this program to open ...........".

Thanks Jerry, my real concern is the Painter OPEN WITH that's listed, and I
really want to clear it. I already have a default program that will
"Always" load jpgs when I double click on it. Which is setup by your
suggestion.

Thanks Again!
M

Try this:

1. Click Start - Run
2. type REGEDIT and press Enter key.
3. Expand to (instead of further Searching anything else regarding WFV):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.extension\OpenWithList

4. Here .extension is the file type you want to modify. For instance, .RA
5. Then the accurate key will

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.RA\OpenWithList

6. In the right side pane, there will be a list of programs who support that
file type.
E.g.:

a. Winamp.exe
b. wmplayer.exe

7. Select the entry you don't required and delete it.
8. If that doesn't change anything then you can also delete the entry from

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.RA\OpenWithProgids

If you are not still sure then please do not modify the Registry as it can
harm your Windows and live with that Open With list until you find a desire
and accurate solution.

Hope this information helps you, let us know!

Thanks everyone for the help in this area. I was successful in removing the
unwanted Open With Application, but unfortunately when I start that
application, it re-enters the Open With again. I looked in the application,
and it's not user set, so I guess I will have to live with it. By the way,
the application is Corel Painter Essentials 3.

Thanks again!
M
