I leave the installer stuff alone. Some programs do "self healing" via the MS installer. A program checks itself at launch (against what's in the installer folder) and if all is not right, it will either repair from a local depository or prompt for the program CD.
Better places to look to regain space:
Multimedia files: These are relatively large. Move older ones that you no longer glance at to other media - an external hard drive or burn to DVD or CD.
Programs that you don't use.
PC Games: I love those big fancy PC games but since they take up sooo much space (the game and the saved files), I uninstall when I've finished with them. If I get in the mood to play again, I just reinstall them.
