Up Arrow Opens Start Menu
Stan850 6/20/2007 10:29:24 PM
I am using Windows XP Home Addition (SP2). When ever I hit the arrow key
several times in a row, the start menu appears. This happens in any software
I am using at the time. How can I stop this from happening?

Is this a recent occurance? If so you could do a sytem restore
(Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore)

This has been happening for quite a while now, so I am not sure how far I
would have to go back for a system restore and would rather not do that if
there is some other solution. I usually have to hit the up arrow key several
times before the start menu comes up. If I hit the up arrow key again after
the start menu comes up, the start menu disappears. Any other thoughts as to
why this is happening.

_____

Have you tried another keyboard? That's the simplest explanation for the
problem, the easiest diagnosis to confirm the problem. It seems as if the
arrow key is somehow generating the [Windows] signal, perhaps because of
dirt or conductive debris inside the keyboard.

Phil- Thank you. I tried another keyboard and it did not solve the problem.
I', guessing it has to do with some setting (hot keys or keyboard shortcut?)
that I may have inadvertenly set. Any thoughts on this?

OK, at least that's a step forward.

What keyboards did you try?
Is a keyboard driver installed?
Is it the correct keyboard driver?
Uninstall the keyboard driver and check keyboard operation
Install the correct driver or the same driver and check keyboard operation.
Start the system in 'Safe Mode' and check the keyboard operation.
Use 'SysInternals' to kill various processes (one at a time, some processes
are critical, so doe some reading to discover which should not be killed)
and check the effect on keyboard operation.
Hope that someone has solved the same problem, and posts here.
Use Google to find the problem.

Do any other keys cause unexpected results?
Pray that the problem is not the motherboard.
