Out of date Graphics Controller ???
Timorous 7/11/2007 2:14:02 PM
My computer currently has an Intel82865G Graphics Controller Card.
I recently installed Black and White, a PC game, along with a couple of
patches and a few hours into the game my character froze. After reading
through various sites for this game, some suggested answers were that my
graphics card should be updated but after checking mine discovered that the
card is now old and there are no updates for it. It was installed on my
computer when I bought it 18/10/05.
It appears also that although this game was XP compatible, my system, the
programmers had to bring out the aforementioned patches after the game came
out to MAKE it playable as there were some problems. So as well as my
graphics card having trouble, it appears the game that should play on the XP
does'nt do it fully.
My question is : Are there any updates for my card out there ?
I have tried everywhere connected with Windows and Intel but to no avail. I
tried the disc that came with my computer but it too came up with no help. I
am a relatively inexperienced computer person and can't get my head around
why this graphics card cannot handle this game....

It's not exactly a high-end gamers video card. That's obvious from "Intel"
being in the name, to be quite blunt.

You did not give your Operating System (Home, Pro, Media Center, etc..)

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=1044&lang=eng

This is probably what you need:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=1044&DwnldID=9498&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng
(It actually seems to cover the three versions of Windows XP that are most
common...)

However - it's from 2005 as well - so....

Might consider checking into what add-on card your computer can take and
getting an NVidia or ATI graphics card.

In answer to your question my system is the Home version and initially I
bought it for storing my digital still and video footage. I did/do not intend
to use it as a ''games'' computer and this is only the second gamee I have
installed, otherwise I probably would have equipped it with a better
graphics/sound card.

I take on board your suggestions of the suitable cards for gaming but as I
said I am not computer literate by all means and would'nt know how to check
about add on cards.

Hopefully the game will be up and running later on tonight with no freezing.

Thanks again.
