Formatting a new hard disk Gerrard 6/23/2007 9:34:00 AM I am trying to install a new Hard drive. The new one is 160 GByte the old one is 32 Gbyte. I have linked the unformatted PATA IDE as a slave. 1. Windows recognises the drive - not as a hard disk but as a removeable drive and asks for a disk to be inserted. Is there anything I can do to get around this? 2. If I can get around the first problem will the XP format command create a formatted drive that I will be able to boot from it when I rmove the old drive and make it the master? I appreciate I will need to make an image of the old drive on teh new one, a simple copy command will not do the job.

All drives must have at least one partition, which can encompass the entire drive, before it can be formatted. Some hard drives require that when you add a slave the master must be set to Master with Slave or set to CS. I believe Western Digital drives require this and it can drive you crazy until you properly re-jumper the Master.
