Using Media Player to Show a Video on a Webpage
Schmiddy98 <schmidlkofer[ at ]aggienetwork.com> 5/12/2007 12:59:22 AM
Hello,

I am looking for a way, either through JavaScript or HTML, to place a
video on a web page, and, when some one opens that page, the video
plays in an embedded Windows Media Player AFTER it has been either
completely downloaded or downloaded most of the way so it doesn't
sputter during playback. I was hoping to be able to set up a function
that gets called periodically where I could monitor the
player.network.downloadProgress property, and when it reaches 100% I
could programmatically start the playback. It appears to work in
Media Player 7, but in Media Player 10 this property is always 100%,
even when the video is not completely downloaded. Is there some other
way I need to use?

Thanks,
Schmiddy98

Yes. I use WMP to import sound clips in an online djembe rhythm sequencer. I
found that if I didn't preload them first the timing of the sequencer became
inaccurate as WMP would try to load the sound each time the sequencer tried
to play it.

The way I got round this is to set autoplay to true. You can also set the
initial volume to 0 for sound files, and hide the player for video.

If you use the volume at 0 and player is hidden you will need some
javascript to enable the user to see and hear the video. You can also use
javascript to read the current position in seconds, so you will be able to
detect if the file is fully loaded.

Increasing WMP's buffer size may also help with this, depending on bandwidth and
length of video.
