Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) codec
Paulo Gloria 6/14/2007 1:41:01 PM
Like other people, I have a problem with WMP11. I'm using Vista Home Premium.
My WMP11 can not play some MP3 files, showing the message "Windows Media
Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio or video portion
of the file) because the Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) codec is not installed on your
computer."
Altough I followed the help and went to the Pluggins site, Microsoft does
not have the codec, having searched for it. Strangely, WMP11 plays other MP3
files. The very same files that does not play in Vista WMP11 plays in WMP11
for XP and and WMP9, which proves that the file is not corrupt.
I saw some questions posted in foruns by some people about trhe same problem.
How can this be solved ? Installing iTunes ?

FourCC 0x50 is standard MPEG1 audio - you should already have that decoder
on your system. Under WMP11's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu
tool, what is listed?

Just after that section is the more relevant "DVD and MPEG" section - what
are the entries in that section?

Re: Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) codec
"zachd [MSFT]" <zachd[ at ]nomailplz.online.microsoft.com> 7/4/2007 1:16:55 AM

Why do you have the encoders for Cyberlink, Roxio, and Sonic installed? Do
you have those respective tools/players installed, or ... how did those get
on your system?

At this point, it looks like at least the Sonic decoders would have
overriden the Microsoft MPEG codec. If you temporarily unregister /
uninstall / rename the Sonic MPEG Audio Decoder, does that get WMP working
in this scenario again? You have a lot of third party codecs there, so it's
an outside shot, but probably worth the effort to try.

What third party tools/players have been installed to the system?
