Lost Pictures

I seem to have accidently deleted my entire photo collection on
my computer. I was sure that I had a backup, but it has apparently been lost.
Windows Photo Gallery displays thumbnails of all the photos, but can't find
the image files to display full size pictures. It won't allow me to copy the
displayed thumbnails. Does Photo Gallery store a separate collection of small
sized images for thumbnails ? Where is it located ?

Don't know about the thumbnails, but you might try this
http://www.recuva.com/
to undelete your files.

You may want to google some sort of recovery software that might undelete
your pics. There are several out there. You might be able to recover them.

Thanks for your replies, but I don't think recovery software would do the
trick, as the photo files were not actually deleted, but were on a second
hard disk that was reformatted. Photo Gallery is still displaying the
thumbnails for these photos. Maybe I could enlarge the thumbnails a bit if I
could find where Photo Gallery has them hidden.

Undelete software can generally recover even formatted disks as long as the
space has not been reused. All a format really does is mark the space as
available. It does not actually write anything.

==================================
If the images were deleted...it may be worth a
try to check your recycle bin.

The thumbs are probably in the Photo Gallery
database but AFAIK there is no way to retrieve
them and even if you did the resolution would
be so low that they would be useless.

Here's how to find the database:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\
Windows Photo Gallery\Pictures.pd4

The file can also be found with an Advanced
Search for pd4.

Go to...Start / Search / Advanced Search.

Check the box..."Include non-indexed, hidden,
and system files" Enter pd4 in the Name field
and left click the Search button.

If the thumbs are the only option...maybe you
could do screen shots and save them that way.

Install that reformatted Hard drive as a secondary "D" drive and use
recovery software to find the pictures. If you haven't used that hard
driver very much, you should be able to recover almost all of your pictures.
Once you begin writing new files to that old drive, the pictures will start
to disappear.

If you've already written a new Windows operating system on that reformatted
drive, then you've probably already done some damage to some pictures.
That's why you should install it as a secondary "D" drive, so you won't have
to reinstall windows.

This is your best chance to recover nearly everything.

I've used the free PC Inspector File Recovery before:

Good luck
