Photo Gallery Bad Printing
"Jill" <jill[ at ]nowhere.no.com> 6/11/2007 5:25:37 PM
I am running Vista Premium, when I open a picture in Windows Photo Gallery
all the pictures look just great. However, when I print a picture from
Photo Gallery it is of very poor quality. It is not sharp, it appears that
the brightness has been turned down a notch or two or even three. I am
using a Cannon MP510 printer. I don't have the problem when using
IrfanView. I really like the printing different size options in Photo
Gallery, but can't use it with the printed pictures being so dull. I have
been testing it on regular paper... not photo paper.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It won't be to do with Photo Gallery as such just the printer options that
it is using - look at bottom right above the cancel button in the print
dialog and modify printer settings from there.

When you click on print in Photo Gallery it should bring up another
little window that also says print. Click it, then be sure you select
your printer and then click options. Your printer's control window
should open. From there change to the type of paper you're using;
plain, glossy, etc., then change the print quality to best, high or
whatever options you prefer.

More advanced tips:

Check if the Cannon printer installed a color management profile. I
have a Cannon MP600 and it installed several. You can check in Control
Panel, Color Management... expand to see all profiles. There should be
one or more to manage your printer. The question is does Photo Galley
use any such installed profile automatically when printing or is it
stuck on it's default sRBG filter? Don't know, never printed from
Photo Galley, I always use Photoshop which does tell you which profile
it is going to use.

Tweak your printer:

Canon, Epson, HP, all the major brands in their newer printers all
offer extensive tweaking of their ink jet printers and lasers. This
can be a trial and error thing. However most any reasonably new
printer now lets you adjust the intensity of each color, , adjust
brightness, contrast and may have other adjustments for different
paper and stuff like that which can make a world of difference in the
final output.
