I'm looking to upgrade to Vista on my laptop, but it doesn't have the full pre-requisites for Aero support (only a 64mb video card). I do want an integrated media center, but as that is really the only appeal to me of Home Premium over Basic, will it work? I haven't found anything anywhere that says one way or another. I asked at office depot the other day and their answer was "I'm not sure, you could try it..." My full specs are 1.8 Ghz Athalon XP processor, 1 Gig of RAM, 64mb Radeon video card, DVD/CDRW, blah, blah, blah. So yeah, is it worth the $50 extra to get Premium for Media Center, or will Basic give me all that Vista can on my lappy?

If you google for "vista ready" there are many sites than will check out your system and comment on how vista ready you are. The microsoft site ( and perhaps others ) will recommend what version of vista your system is best suited for.

Do you happen to have a copy of Vista kicking around? If so, install it without a key and choose "Ultimate" and test it for yourself.
Your question is rare enough that I doubt you'll find a good answer, although to be honest I'd love to know myself.

Aero requires 128MB on the graphics card. And if you have a Radeon card it must be a 9550 or higher. "DevilsPGD" <spam_narf_spam[ at ]crazyhat.net> wrote in message news:3qah73lmmr49bbqb3cchk8jaigds04sqsa[ at ]4ax.com...

Why are you replying to me? Did I ask about graphics cards?

Because I do not have the entire thread on my system. And therefore do not have Robin's post to respond to.

I don't have one sittin' around (haven't bought it yet). I didn't know you could install any version without a key (I'm assuming it's got that 30 day activation limit on it). If you install up higher than you bought (like if I bought Basic but installed Premium or Ultimate), can you just pay the difference at that point? If so, that would help immensely.

I know. It's not a question of Aero; I wasn't sure if there were minimum specs to run Media Center or not.

Yeah, I've run those programs, but they only list that my card will not support Aero. I'm hoping that this is an indication that I can run Media Center, but I'd rather not blow the $50 extra to find out I can't.
