Again, IT DEPENDS ON THE SOFTWARE. I use Vegas for Video editing and I often author 5 track Dolby surround which indeed is five separate audio tracks and the output does play out of the appropriate speakers. When I first installed Vista it didn't properly use all five speakers. I had to pull all the speakers out and one by one set them up again and the audio controller reconfigured the outputs. Could be the problem.
