Monitor images out of proportion
eldonstuhr 6/8/2007 7:51:03 PM
Recently purchased new HP computer and wide screen monitor with Vista Home
Premium loaded. All images whether jpegs, video's, or web page pictures are
wide and short. Everyone appears short and fat. I thought this should be an
easy fix but have looked for all monitor settings and adjustments and
searched the forums, and haven't had any luck. Any ideas would be much
appreciated.
Thanks!

Did you look only at the settings on the physical monitor? Because it sounds
like the video resolution needs to be adjusted (from Display Settings). Or
do you need to update the monitor's driver, the video card driver, or ensure
the correct monitor is identified (is this a laptop or desktop)?

What is the NATIVE RESOLUTION of your monitor? (Consult your monitor's
documentation.)

Is your display resolution (right click desktop, choose Personalization, click
Display Settings, is the slider set to the NATIVE RESOLUTION of your monitor?

Eldon,

You should make sure that you are using a screen resolution that matches the
wide aspect ratio of your new widescreen monitor. A traditional 4:3
resolution (like 1280x1024 or 1024x768) is going to stretch your display.
You should check your display's user manual to see what the recommnended (or
native) resolution is and set it to that.

For example, I recently purchased Dell's 24-inch widescreen monitor and I
had to install a monitor profile from the included CD to get the right
resolution option to appear in the list. So I'd start with the user manual,
but also check the manufacturer's Web site or call tech nsupport if needed.

I hope that helps.

Thanks Tim, CalBear and Dave! It was indeed the resolution set incorrectly.
Can't remember what it was set at but in checking I found the native
suggested resolution for this monitor to be 1440x900. I re-set it there and
now the proportion is perfect! Not being very computer saavy I had it in my
head that resolution was was simply pixels/inch for clarity, not really
appreciating their two direction nature.
Thanks again for the solution!
