Pixela (Sony)
"MikeG" <mgaydos06[ at ]adelphia.net> 6/4/2007 7:33:19 PM
Pixela is Sony software that came with my DVD Handicam, and I need it to DL
the videos to my HD.

Of course, it is not compatable with Vista.

I had installed Vista and had to re-install XP in order to use the computer
with the videos I make with the Handicam. Can anyone suggest a workaround?

I must use the Handicam and I'd love to have Vista. I got a free Vista Disk
when i got this new Dell machine last November.

The Handicam uses those small DVD-RW disks (1.4 GB) and I am able to insert
these disks into the DVD drive on my machine. Is there any way to read them
once inserted, and then to copy the videos to the HD, where I can then
modify them in Windows MovieMaker or another program?

Hoping for an answer - I may format and reinstall Vista tonight if I can get
a response...many thanks...MikeG

Not something I would suggest. Even if you manage to insert a
mini-disc into your drive, once it, you may not get it out. I've heard
many horror stories on both the Windows and Mac platforms when people
tried this.

Since you're also dealing with a non standard format without the
special software that comes with the camera Windows probably is too
dumb to read the file and even if it could it probably isn't in any
useful format that other software could do anything with.

The file format is .cda, from Sony. I rec a small video and the small disk
loads fine into the cd drive - the drive has an indent just for this size
right in it. But I cannot import it into the XP Movie Maker nor can I import
it into any of the other video editing software that I have. And reading the
Sony info page that you referenced, it seems like they have no intention of
creating new software for this camera...geeze. I'm starting to hate MS and
Sony. I also have some video format conversion software and even they cannot
recognize the .cda file format...MikeG in Erie

Are you sure the cam makes a cda format disc? This is the standard for music
cd discs. You don't say which model cam you have, but all that I know of
burn mpeg2's (VOB) to the disc, in dvd video format, so that once the disc
is finalised it can be popped in your normal dvd player and watched.
You may not have finalised the disc, or be recording in the VR format. Even
this once finalised should be fine.

Finalise in cam, put dvd in dvd drive in pc, copy files using drag and drop
to move all the files to the hard drive.
XP movie maker will not edit mpegs.
Some forms of Vista have mpeg decoders so will edit the mpeg (VOB)
Programmes such as Ulead video studio 11, pinnacle studio or adobe premiere
elements 3 are all capable of taking the files direct from the disc and
editing them. They will also output direct to disc.

I worte this when dvd cams first came out, so it is a little outdated on app
names, but the theory is still correct.

Hi Graham: You're right. I forgot to finalize the disk. So I did, and it now
gives me .VOB files (amoung others) and it plays when I click it in Windows
Explorer on the drive letter and file name. I have Amadis Video Converter,
and also Ulead Studio 10. I'm trying to convert the file, but so far it only
converts a bit of the whole thing, and I don't understand that problem. If I
can get that solved, I can use Vista after all. I also have to see if Ulead
Studio 10 will run under Vista, and Also Amadis Video converter.

The Sony Camera I have is a Handicam Model DCR-DVD301. Super Steady Shot.

Will keep you posted...thanks a lot for the info...Mike
