New to Vista -- No streaming video?
Girrlkitty 6/5/2007 11:18:01 PM
Hello! I just bought a new computer with Vista Business, and I can't get
streaming video on any web site. I just get a blank space where the player
should be -- no video or audio. I can download the video and it plays fine,
but I can't actually view it on the page. I've tried it on a variety of
sites, and none of them have worked. Is this a known problem? Am I missing a
setting somewhere? I've gone through my firewall and Internet settings to no
avail, although I don't know this OS well enough yet to say I've hit them
all. Any suggestions on how to enable this ability again? I use the Firefox
browser as my default (running the most current version), but I have no video
on IE or Firefox.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I have the same problem, when I click on a link in a web page all I get is a
blank screen WMP is set as my default, but will not open, Media Player works
fine for all other things just not for streaming video, previously was
working perfectly.

I thought of reinstalling WMP 11 but I cannot find it anywhere on MS sites
(11.0.6000.6324), I am unable to use system restore as a IT person deleted
the restore points recently. Have also checked the settings and all seems to
be as it should be, I even compared the settings to my other computer which
runs XP and they are identical.

Have searched for fixes but can't seem to find any.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks

You shouldn't need to reinstall Windows Media Player to fix what sounds like
a file association issue. Does going to the system's Default Programs tools
and setting WMP as your default there fix you up?

I've actually tried that a few times, but no luck so far. Or, I should say,
it will work for a few days, and then, with nothing changed, it will stop
playing streaming video again. I end up having to reinstall WMP and fiddle
with settings to get it to play again. But I'm also having occasional
bluescreen crashes that no one can seem to tell me how to fix, so I'm not
ruling out that it's a different issue altogether.

"Nothing changed" here should mean that there's another application on the
system that is actually quietly changing these settings for you then.

What file types are affected?
What third party players are on the system? I would suspect that a third
party player is trying to reestablish file type ownership and doing a bad
job of it, causing this error.

Although you don't mention what events lead into the blue screen, that
should be unrelated to this. You can disable automatic restart to read the
messages there, but that's likely something you would want to at the least
open a new thread on, and more likely contact your computer provider for
assistance upon.

Re: New to Vista -- No streaming video?
Girrlkitty 7/4/2007 6:18:02 PM

I played in my Media Player settings again, and tried changing the proxy
settings to "Automatically detect settings" that seems to have gotten the
streaming video working again for the moment. The only files ever effected by
that are the ones embedded on Web sites -- downloading them always works. So
maybe this will be the permanent solution.

As for the bluescreens -- I get about a half-dozen different errors, and
none of them seem to happen for the same things. I've tried going through
both HP (my manufacturer) and MS, as well as testing all my RAM and switching
out sticks, rolling back my settings to factory, etc. It seems to go for a
while with no problems, then will crash four or five times in a row when I
try to do anything. Then it finally boots and runs fine again. It is
maddening.
