XP 64 to Vista Home Premium
Dan 6/20/2007 4:08:04 AM
HI. i am wondering if I can buy the upgrade version of Vista Home Premium
(159.99$US) and install it through my current XP 64 bit XP. I have a large
extra HD, so could I simply partition it? Thanks

Only if you buy the 64 bit version. Unless you can find a 64 bit upgrade
version, this may be a two-step affair as only Vista Ultimate comes with
both 32 and 64 bit DVDs in the box.

So you may have to buy the 32 bit version and then follow whatever steps are
required on the enclosed card / order form to obtain the 64 bit version from
Microsoft for a small handling charge.

Of course you could just buy the 32 bit version, but it'll have to be a full
(not upgrade) version and you'll need to reformat or dual-boot.

Hi, Dan.

Even if you had the 32-bit DVD in hand, you can't install ANY 32-bit OS
while booted into a 64-bit OS, or vice-versa. You can't even clean install
Vista x86 by starting from WinXP x64, much less "upgrade" from WinXP x64 to
any x86 version of Vista. Too many differences between the hardware
drivers.

Your options are as Mark has outlined.
