Are you formatted NTFS or FAT32? Are you shutting down properly? Have you run Chkdsk with the /f option to repair the problems, then does the 'dirty' bit get set for the next time you run? What volume has the chkdsk being run on it - is it the Vista volume or another one?

Go to your my computer, right click on your Vista drive, select properties then tools, then error checking/check now then make sure you have automatically fix (/f) system errors checked. Run it. If you still have errors you should run the other option. You may have a disk failing, though Vista is pretty good about warning if that is detected.

Thanks again for the reply. Unfortunately problem not fixed. Running Chkdsk with fix errors checked solved the problem temporarily only. After working for a few minutes (installed AVG and Skype) Vista volume again corrupt at start up! Do you think my hardware is the problem? Or running the PC with Vista and XP? Also checked the disk, it is ok. Please help. Juerg

The only problem running XP and Vista in dual boot is the loss of recovery (system and files). Since you are formatted NTFS it is very rare for the dirty bit to be set since most writes are logged and can be recovered even during an improper shutdown. Do you have both XP and Vista on the same drive? If you ran the try to recover bad cylinders the drive should be okay and in my experience Vista is pretty good at warning about failing drives. I know enough about AVG to know it is unlikely to be a problem and I haven't seen any similar postings related to Skype or your problem. Hopefully someone else will have some ideas.

Correction: Reverted (i.e. lost) after an improper shutdown.
How do you "recover" something that was never written to disk?
You can't. All you can do is clean up the mess, and the way NTFS does that (revert to state before the file was created or saved) is not very different to what happens in FATxx (reclaim broken files as lost chains, truncate incomplete files, etc.)
Yes, the file system's sane again, either way.
But your changes are GONE.
>in my experience Vista is pretty good at warning about failing drives.
I haven't seen Vista on a bad HD - what does it do, and how early does it warn you? NTFS auto-"fixes" bad sectors on the fly, just as the HD's own logic tries to do; does it alert when this happens, or does it blithely carry on until this process finally fails altogether?

60% yes. I'd do 24 hours in MemTest86, with some other boot disk in place so that a spontaneous restart won't just re-run the test and appear "OK". You say you've checked the physical HD; how?
If there are ANY errors on either a physical HD check, or a 24-hour RAM testing session, that's bad hardware that needs to be replaced.
One exception: Some Acers throw errors in MemTest86 even when "OK", due to some compatibility screwup. Avoid.

You may not like my wording, but this is from Vista Inside/Out
Because NTFS volumes keep a journal of all disk activities, they are able to recover and remain clean even if you shut down in the middle of a disk write. Check Disk is most likely to run automatically at startup only on FAT32 volumes, after an unexpected shutdown.
I had a disk failure warning during either beta or RC1. I don't remember the exact wording. In my case it was a loose SATA cable.

Your wording's fine :-)
>Because NTFS volumes keep a journal of all disk activities, they are able to >recover and remain clean even if you shut down in the middle of a disk >write. Check Disk is most likely to run automatically at startup only on >FAT32 volumes, after an unexpected shutdown.
Read all that stuff about journalling and rollback very carefully. It will at some point acknowledge that this only maintains metadata, not what they call "user data", i.e. the actual content of the files.
Also, the inherent problem remains; material that has never reached the disk from RAM is nowhere to be found on disk, and therefore cannot be recovered on disk. It's still just fallback and discard.
>I had a disk failure warning during either beta or RC1. I don't remember >the exact wording. In my case it was a loose SATA cable.
That sounds more of a show-stopper than NTFS's auto-fix couldn't hide :-)

I agree that the data are lost. The journaling just prevents the problem we are talking about, which is the setting of the dirty bit in the registry which causes the engagement of chkdsk on startup.

If I recall the message went on to say that I should begin copying my files etc to another drive, etc.
