Vista is SO SLOW
AnaLoGMunKy 6/20/2007 4:08:01 AM
hey peeps..

Vista is slow... there is no two ways about it... I congratulate you If
your one of the lucky ones who has it working nice with everything.

Specs for this pc - compaq laptop, 1.7 celeron, 256mb graphics, 1gig ram,
came from the shop with vista enabled etc.

So far it takes ages to do everything. Im not interested in upgrading, why
would I want to when I have a desktop pc with bout same specs along with my
buddies laptop of same specs also running XP home edition on both.... AND
BOTH BEAT THE CRAP OUTTA THIS VISTA OS ON *EVERYTHING*.

Someone explain that.. And dont mention upgrades or programs installed or
uninstalled or spyware hack crap or that they havnt had any probs cos Im not
interested. I want an answer.

There have been HUGE amounts of posts about people being unhappy about
vista so Its not just me. If we can -Download- AND play -dawn of war- AND
-listen to music- on both our other machines then why not vista.

And once again dont mention upgrades or programs installed or uninstalled
or spyware hack crap or that they havnt had any probs cos Im not interested.

I just hope microsoft sort this crap soon cos we pay thru the teeth for
software like this and I spent all my hard earned cash from my job buying
this and now Im skint as fek and CANNOT afford these mistakes from a
MULTIBILLIONAIR corperation.

No, you obviously do not want an answer, the above proves it.

You just want to whine and now you have, feel better?

Hey Ana--

Make sure you do what it takes to make it as fast as possible. It would be
faster if you upgraded your hardware, but you can still make it run very
decently with what you have.

Speed PC and Control CPU Tips/Steps

SPEED AND CPU:

_______________

1) Trim processes you don't need in TM. Google them or "search engine of

your choice them" if you have to.

2) Go to

services.msc in run box and turn off services not needed and there are some.

3) Run System File Checker.

SFC: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

In Vista run it from an elevated command prompt. Right click command on

start and run as administrator.

4) Run 3 or so spyware scans Windows Defender, , Adaware, and Spybot

5) Probably the most important for speed consistently and efficient resource

use DEFRAG with www.raxco.com or www.diskeeeper.com with 15% free space on

drive if DK and or >5% if Raxco's Perfect Disk.

Download Adaware and

Spybot from here.

6) Unck items from msconfig start tab you don't need starting and some

won't start--peoiple who think just uncking for many are naive because there

are 12 places things can be started including several reg keys like Run Once

keys and there are serveral.

7) Turn off Messaging service--it's a security vulnerability and it slows

you

8) Defrag very often every other day actually.

9) Turn off indexing.

10) Clear TIF and %temp% files (delete) and go to safe mode to get as many

as u can.

10) Do troubleshooting with msconfig.

11) Do Clean boot with msconfig utility and search for the directions here:

1) Task Manager lists the services on the services tab in Vista.

2) Type services.msc in run box and using the list of services, click the

service and you'll get a description of services.

3) There is a list here of the default services and a description>>click

"default settings for services" in the left pane.

4) To view service dependencies

1.

Open Services.

2.

In the details pane, right-click the service that you want to view

dependencies for, and then click Properties.

3.

Click the Dependencies tab.

4.

To view services that are associated dependencies of the selected service,

in the list on the Dependencies tab, click the plus sign next to the

Defragging with a decent defrag every day will make a huge dent inefficient

resource/CPU use.

Perfect Disk has a 5 month full functionality trial on now for Windows

Vista.

Good luck,

Because people like me who have taken advantage of the WEI and now my Vista
runs like lightning and of course I am not going to waste my time going
around posting how great it is and most people who are happy with Vista knew
what to do and now that is up to you. YOUR CALL!!!

No one seems to get this....so think hard:

Companies like Dell and HP are selling underpowered crap with only Vista as
an option. The reputation of the OS is sinking on this simple fact.

Check in your power plan that the CPU isn't being unnecessarily throtled
down.

Control Panel/ Power Options/ Change Plan Settings/Change Advanced power
Settings/Processor Power Management

On my Compaq, the default was processor Maximum state at 50%, on battery or
PLUGGED IN! Thanks, HP/Compaq, for picking a dumb setting.

Isn't that one of the good things about Vista? If not, why are they pushing
all the hardware?

Celerons are slow with any operating system. People who have good
performance are NOT using these processors.

Aero is certainly not good on machines with slow processors, video cards or
memory.

"Companies like Dell and HP are selling underpowered..."
Exactly the same thing happened when Windows XP was released.
It seems the new operating system always has a "sinking" reputation
until the next is released.

No. I bought computers from companies for a laboratory at that time. When
XP came out, only computers *completely* functional and efficient with the
product were sold.

Now we have computers that are being sold that are completely
under-equipped.

Do you really think that these buyers are going "oh! I made a mistake with
my hardware)"? NO. They are trashing Microsoft and the OS.

Microsoft shot itself in the foot here...they had control and now have lost
it.

You dont see huge amounts of posts in the XP forums about people been happy
with XP but you see heaps of posts about people having problems. That must
mean that XP is a horrible system

My machine is neither underpowered nor slow with Vista.
I just don't like having the accelerator in the trunk and the gearshift in
the wheelwell.
Vista is getting a bad reputation because it was poorley designed, not
because it is sold on underpowered machines.

I make sure to turn off all the fancy slide out menus, shadowing, etc etc
etc.
Don't ever "let Windows decide" what is best for your machine.
I prefer to configure for best performance.
right click my computer>properties
click advanced system settings
tell the User Access Control nag me to death screen, yes, it's really,
really, really me.
on advanced tab, performance section, click settings
click in the 'adjust for best performance' circle, click apply.
wait for it to apply your settings.
at the bottom of the control panel/system & maintenance/system screen (which
is what should show after you close advanced settings)
click performance
click indexing options
turn indexing off
your machine should now run faster.

"Robert Firth" <webmaster[ at ]winvistainfo.org> 6/20/2007 8:38:30 AM
I wouldn't say that it is Microsoft that is to blame or doing the shoving.
It is the OEM/system builders that are equiping these machines that way, and
hardware manufacturers that are not writing proper drivers. Nothing
Microsoft can do about that but make the OS mainstream and force (throught
the powers of consumer demand) hardware manufacturers to make their hardware
and software compatible.

It's the drive for cheap computers that moves consumers (and OEMs) to
underpowered computers.

Well put, ok no install or uninstall. Try fixing your registry. Or even
support from the place you bought the machine... Vista shouldn't run any
slower, maybe a few teething problems and compatibility issues. My top also
came with vista and when I installed a few wrong programs it slowed down a
whole load. System restore to the 1st point made and it was sorted. I was
more carful with what I choose to install. Rather be ahead of the crowd...
Use the latest and learn from its defects. This way you are forced to know
what you are doing.

Otherwise use XP and in a year or so when there is little out there for it
you will be posting, Eish where can find this for the OLD xp or how come XP
doesn't have support for this... etc...

I'd go along with that.

Worth installing if only to escape the repetitiveness of
windowsxp.general.......

........although I suspect there'll be a few more thousand enquiries on how
to add an item to Vista's 'Sendto' menu, before the year is out.

Absolutely. Cheap, underpowered laptop with a bad CPU and insufficient
memory. That 256 meg video is SHARED, not dedicated.

RE: Vista is SO SLOW
AnaLoGMunKy 6/20/2007 1:34:03 PM
Hmm.. seems like I opened a can of worms last night, then woke up to find
it still squirming. Lol.....

First off..... XP did have lots wrong with it and there were forums just
like these with ppl saying shtuff like this... and now look, they sorted it.
It needs ppl saying its not working to get them actually earning their money
and release some damn updates that improve the system. I really hope that in
a couple of years they will have sorted this problem with vista and it will
run better than XP..... BUT ITS NOW THAT COUNTS. Im not in the next year and
I dont want to upgrade. Maybe I should have done my homework and got better
job and wife and 2 kids and BMW and so have money to upgrade, but I didnt,
and neither do the majority of the world. Climb off your high horse.

Second... I didnt want opinions on how to clear my startup progs etc.
although thanks as you were trying to help. I am whining and said congrats if
yours works fine... All I seem to get on these forums Is 90% Idiots saying
some sarcastic crap. How about you take the insults away from being personal
and try to form a community telling microsoft that vista just isnt ready yet
(for most ppl).

Third... Celeron isnt THIS slow so its not the power of the laptop. I
remember having a really cak computer all those years ago and running some
games I tried on this and it just doesnt work. If vista needs that much power
then its NOT READY and they should not be selling it to ppl for general use.
Vista WILL become the next OS used same way as 95, 98, XP and all the niggly
bits between. But not yet. I will await yet more piles of crap in reply with
the occasional diamond in the rough. i.e. what val said about the power as
that was something different.. I checked and its not that.... and to Will_s
I say the reason I posted and said dont give answers on the various issues is
cos IV TRIED these things. I want answers like vals or support of ppl who are
in similar situations not from fools looking to jab a finger.

What I would prefer in reply is if ppl have constructive criticism or good
progs that work with vista. Maybe also some info on some dude saying "yeah
but I saw an article saying Microsoft are working hard to sort and there is
an update out in august which sorts lots of these issues" (im dreaming here
methinks). Otherwise Im gonna take this back and get XP home until vista
works properly. I will keep you posted on this progress.

And be warned... all Idiots will be laughed at with much hillarity and
rolling around on the floor with much merryment. yarp... The munky has
spoken....

Sorry to inform you but a Celeron ***IS*** that slow, due to the lack of a
proper on-die cache.

Celeron is the cheapest of the cheap. No computer has ever given a good
write up of a Celeron.

You get what you pay for.

***YOU*** got what you paid for. Now you have to live with it.

Sorry but your wrong in a few ways and right in others.

I agree the performance is not amazing but Iv used other lower end
celerons in the past and games and dvd's work fine you just cant pump em up
to a decent graphics etc... this thing wont run properly...

It takes ages to open a notepad document or just as long to open the game.
I even put the halo demo on with all specs at lowest then all specs at
highest and it ran EXACTLY the same. Surly if the system just couldnt handle
it then at higher specs it would either not run or run even SLOWER. but it
doesnt. Why cant you understand its not the specs. I bet u when I get em to
put XP home on it will run the game just fine.

This OS is not ready. If I need a high end computer to run the same progs,
old and new, on a vista OS then I think value for money (which is important
to those without much) is not being had with the current OS. I am not keen on
microsoft and would like to learn to use linux but microsoft have offered the
most friendly and easy to use OS till vista. That will change when vista gets
an overhaul just like previous incarnations of windows have.

All of you who say "well you get what you payed for etc.." just come out
sounding snobbish basicly saying "I have more money than u, deal with
it"..... I sincerely hope you dont mean it in that way and I try to think
the best of ppl but I accept some peeps really dont care and seem to browse
forums with the sole aim of putting people down. I hope it makes their lives
truly better and does them some good (like running into a lamppost).

Then the system is not suitable for the purposes of which it was sold and

Re: Vista is SO SLOW

I kind of agree but there are things Microsoft can do. If Vista isnt up to
scratch AND suppliers are selling pc's that are not good enough then sounds
like they both have a responsibility to correct that problem. What is going
to happen is Microsoft will improve vista and suppliers will be as crap as
ever. But im not using vista on this machine when XP will run better. When
the standard of pc's rise to fit vista and vista becomes (which it will) more
compatable THEN I'll buy a new pc. Till then XP all the way as its now stable
and been out for years so has been tweaked by MS.

Sounds to me like your hard drive is spinning down to save power, and
you're having to wait for it to spin back up. Check your power settings.

So you fall into the 90% Idiot category? You can afford a BMW and you have
a Celeron? Don't think so (BMW of course)

Maybe your Monkey needs spanking :-)

This is incorrect. The last celerons had the same base as pentium 4, only
the cache was different.
The real reasons for the downplay of celerons are 2.

1) A bad history with older celerons that were indeed slower
2) Its all about marketing (its too complicated to get into this now)

I have done a comparison a while back between normal pentiums and celerons
of the same speed...

the difference was minimal

for example a celeron at 2600mhz was faster than a pentium 4 at 2400mhz

Maybe but Iv looked at the power settings and everything is on high
preformance. The HD is set to spin down after 20 mins but maybe its not
working. Iv looked thru the other power options and so far it doesnt explain
preformance this poor. Either this computer is skrewed or vista wont run on
it.

Im going to get the guy in the shop to show me vista running on another one
and if it just turns out to be this pc then Ill get a replacement. Otherwise
back to XP.

Mis-read the fact about the BMW, and yes you are in the 90% category and

"Jume" <jume[ at ]konithuki.com> 6/20/2007 4:44:25 PM
i don't think vista is the culprit here:

athlon xp 1700+ (barely the same processor power you have)
896mb ram (had 1gb but one chip died a few time ago), sdram 133 mhz (im not
joking you know)
gf 7600 256mb

vista is running, even if a bit slower than xp was, absolutely flawless and
surprisingly fast (rc1 in this very machine was pretty slow), with all bells
and whistles activated

and no, really, only a bit slower, it is not running much slower like many
ultra-idiotic-fanatic people may say, maybe some OLDER PROGRAMS may REDRAW
slower due to the changes made in that area (e.g. corel 9, some cad
programs, etc), but PROCESSOR and overall computer power is obviously the
very same... games should be affected also, until manufacturers give us
better drivers (e.g. nvidia speeds and ati opengl)

i've read that you will go to the store to check a live demonstration, i
think it is the way to go, if it is that much slower something is not right,
either in the crapware installed by the oem (try uninstalling every piece of
the stupid software oem used to install by default, this worked already in
some people i know for slower hd transfer rates they had), or either bad
hardware combination/support/drivers/health

another possibility may be software compatibility, but if even your notepad
will open slow, then it is not (over 1sec or less here, INCLUDING the
opening animation)

anyways, if unsure, you can try reinstalling vista, if it is still slow,
right to the store and get it changed

I'm using an eMachines pc with Vista Home Basic on a Celeron(R) D CPU
3.46GHz, 3458 Mhz, with 512MB RAM, about $499 at WalMart.

It takes only a fraction of a second to open a text file, up to 10 seconds
for some programs, but not until I removed the OEM McAfee and replaced it
with Avast4 (free) and made adjustments and tweaks. Out of the box, it took
four times as long to restart as it does now. YMMV

Some software is Vista compaible, others only "work on Vista" but not very
well, and some just will not install even with 'compatibility' and 'run as
admin' options.

It's a learning experence that takes time. I think most people would be
better off using their old XP machines for work until they get their new
Vista computers running the way they want them, because most OEM systems are
not very well configured yet. IMHO

If you're running an antivirus program on your machine, check whether
that is not the cause of slowness.

What do you mean by "completely under-equipped."
When Windows XP was originally released, many computers sold by the
OEMs came with 64 MB RAM which is the minimum for Windows XP, but
"completely under-equipped." for many users.
The first thing many needed to do to get the desired performance was
increase memory.
Some also needed more powerful video cards.
Many issues raised today with Windows Vista are similar to those when
Windows XP was released almost 6 years ago.

Robert;
Microsoft is stuck between a rock and hard place.
If the minimum requirements are left as they are, you get complaints
as seen in this thread.
If the minimums are raised, Microsoft will be accused of helping the
hardware manufacturers since less current hardware would be compatible
and users would be forced to upgrade more hardware.

Perhaps more emphasis should be place on Recommended.
No matter what would have been done, there would have been complaints
from somewhere.

There always are such complaints. In hindsight, do you think that vista
could have been designed to be as capable as it is with lesser hardware
requirements?

A celeron? Vista's fine, it's your computer that's slow.

I'd think differently. As long as Moore's Law is well alive (which it is at
this time), one can get a much better hardware/system with the same amount
of money spent 2-3 years ago.

Therefore, I don't see the problem for raising the system requirement bar a
little bit to match the evolution of hardware. On the other hand, any
person with reasonable computer knowledge will know that it can't be true
for the minimum system requirement so that puts the company's statement into
questionable.

My "speculation" is that the purpose is to create an illusion for the
"minimum costs" of the system and/or OS for most people tend to think about
purchase cost only.

I definitely agree that they should put more emphasis on recommended system
requirements.

IMHO, the whole problem is IT industry wishes to positioning computers as a
home appliance and push it into every living room (at least this company
wishes to) but still can't come up any product including OS that even close
to a TV set in terms of usability and the best thing they (the entire
industry) can do is to create an illusion for the pricing factor which also
failed in most cases.

Now here's a surprising sequence of events - asking a bunch of people who
make their living from selling computer hardware for advice on how to speed
up your computer, and strangely enough ending up being advised to go back
to the computer shop for a replacement. How could that possibly happen ? ;-)

BTW I have Vista flying in a virtual machine here, on top of XP and on a
five year old machine.

I agree, it's rediculously slow. Now I'm in a predicament, i need to buy a
new laptop but everything out there has this trash preinstalled. How do i get
anything nowdays that doesn't have Vista on it??

Go to Windows Explorer, right click "Computer" and check the Rating: Windows
Experience Index. If this shows less than 4.00, then it's your computer that
is not up to running Vista with any kind of zest. I reckon all computers
need at least 4.5 to operate at an acceptable level with any version of
Vista and higher the version the higher the rating needs to be. I don't
think manufacturers should sell computers with less than 4.0.

Take a look here for more info.

Ed,
The Experience Index can be misleading. It is set according to the
lowest subscore not an average of the subscores. I would think that if you
have a score of 4 or higher in all but one subscore then the computer is
running well even though it may say your subscore is 2.4 or whatever.
Therefore, one should consider the overall preformance of the unit when
determining the Experience Index or at least that is what I think.

Sure, Larry.

If you are happy, it is not for me to contradict. A WEI of below say 3.0
however, will have at least one item seriously below par for Vista. It would
be wise to try and upgrade that item. In a laptop, unfortunately, that is
usually quite difficult. It's as I suggested. I don't think manufacturers
should sell any computer running Vista with a WEI under 4.0. Just my
opinion, of course.

Right. A seriously weak video card. I have a similar setup on one PC with a
7300 GT. The WEI has to be interpreted relative to your needs. I don't need
high powered graphics, so the PC with a WEI of 4.3 for video with everything
else > 5.4 is just fine for me. For a serious gamer, no.

Processor 5.3
Memory 5.4
Graphics 5.9
Gaming graphics 5.9
Primary hard disk 5.8

Vista runs slow.

And how come my processor - Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 [ at ] 2.4Ghz is the lowest
item on the list?

Think this tosses the Experience Index out the window (every pun intended)

Sorry about that. Should have been a bit clearer. Right click "Computer"
select "Properties".

There is also some info on improving perfomance after clicking the "Windows
Experience Index" link then "Learn how to improve your computer's
performance" link

For what it's worth, I run Vista Home Premium:

Processor 5.5
Memory (RAM): 5.5
Graphics: 5.9
Gaming Graphics: (3D etc): 5.6
Primary Hard Disk (data transfer rate) 5.9
