Does anyone know whether there are any plans to add sideshow support to the Zune? Seems like it could be a great use of the built in WIFI which is otherwise underutilised at the moment.

Our understanding is that "it would be possible," but there needs to be a bit of work enabling the IP stack to support that functionality. Integral to the rendering of Windows SideShow Gadgets, it would be nice if they based it on the .NET Micro Framework so you could get the additional features that provides, too.

Most SideShow devices availabel to date ARE based on the .NET Micro Framework.

True, but I was referring to those that only support the Simple Content Format or those that have limited functionality like the Momento Picture Frames. I suppose they could just put the .NET MF on top of the Zune OS.

the "Zune OS" is Windows CE, which has the Compact framework.

So the question then becomes what would it take to implement the Windows SideShow client on the Zune? Is that feature just a "plug in" on any device with CE? It appears it took a bit of work to get it running on the Momento frames (even though it is not using the .NET MF). We assume it is something Microsoft would have to deliver (with their own "theme") because there currently is no way to upload your own code into the Zune.
