I've been trying to get something answered for quite some time, especially
since I helped test Vista. Is there any plan to allow current WM6
phones/devices to be able to be used as SideShow devices? I really think
this would be an awesome feature if not.

Although it would be awesome to have a Windows SideShow rendering client for
these devices, we envision a multitude of issues when trying to do this in
practice. The current Windows SideShow architecture, for the most part, is
not designed for intermittent links from the client side. If you are
looking at using your device as a remote control within the house where you
have a permanent connection through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, it might not be too
bad. Think, for instance, of the complications of trying to do it over a
cellular data connection. The first issue is that you would need to have a
continuous connection and/or a very robust Windows SideShow Gadget that can
handle the intermittent connection. Most of the current ones are oblivious
to this problem and it is not a feature that the current development
environment makes transparent to a Windows SideShow Gadget developer.
The second is that some Windows SideShow Gadgets may transfer a
"considerable" amount of data for updating the screen continuously. In
other words, the current Windows Media Player Windows SideShow Gadget the
comes with Windows Vista continuously sends data across the link every
second or so to keep the Now Playing time updated constantly - and there is
no control over how this process takes place. To make this work well, there
should be a way to "optimize" the amount of data sent from the Windows
SideShow Gadget and how often that data is sent across the communications
link. None of the current Windows SideShow Gadgets has this configuration
capability. The bigger problem is in navigation. There already is a delay
induced between pressing a navigation or command button, having it sent back
to the part running on the PC, and then getting the data back out and
updating the screen. This would be a mess if the link were there sometimes
and not others. We have not seen a way to monitor the link "out of band"
from the Windows SideShow communications streams, but it would take some
work to have this operate in a fashion the user would understand.
Although conceptually it would be great to have the capabilities provided by
Windows SideShow on a mobile device, the user would see quite a few
inconsistencies in operation between various approaches taken by different
Windows SideShow Gadget developers and running locally or remotely
transparently. Many would get frustrated until a consistent approach to
solving some of the problems mentioned above is developed and documented.
It sounds like a great concept to try to achieve in the next version of the
platform though.

At the Mobile and Embedded Developer Conference, we officially announced
that we will support Windows SideShow on Windows Mobile 5 and 6! I don't
have any specific release dates at the moment, unfortunately, but we are
targetting the 3Q of this year. We'll be sure to post when it is available,
though.
