Problem Installing KB929123
"JT" <no[ at ]mail.here> 6/21/2007 12:06:05 PM
Update 929123 does not want to install on our citrix servers and one other
server all windows 2003 R2 servers. The update was approved and downloaded
to the servers. We install manually. Installing this update shows as being
completed successfully on the update status screen of the servers requiring
it however WSUS never reflects this update as being applied. If we install
the update and then wuauclt /detectnow the update pop-ups again immediatly
as needing to be installed. I have tried installing in execute mode as well
as user mode on the citrix servers and even tried restarting after applying
the patch in both cases. The patch update continues to pop up. I also tried
to disable this update in wsus v3 but it said it was already downloaded and
patch did not support removal.

So how can I resolve this one?

Thanks

I wanted to add. I do not have outlook express installed on these servers.
The only thing that exists is the outlook express folder in program files. I
am wondering if this is having some effect. Maybe there are some existing
registry entries left behind that this patch looks for to determine if the
patch is needed but since the program dosent exist it never actually updates
and cant modify the entries it expects to modidy?

Anyways wanted to ensure that I had included that detail.

Have you confirmed that you have approved the correct update for 929123 for
Windows Servers? There are three different update packages for KB929123. One
for Windows Mail on Vista (Update ID:c20787ed-...), one for OE on Windows XP
(Update ID:c4331884-...), and one for OE on Windows Server 2003 (Update
ID:36dab2f4-...).

I don't see anything in your description about:
[a] Installing the update in single-user mode, or
[b] Rebooting the Citrix server before/after installing the update.

If an attempt to install an OE update is executed while OE is in use,
consider that the files won't actually be installed, but will be staged to
overwrite the locked file at the next server restart. It's possible that the
update is erroneously reporting itself as installed, but not actually
installed (yet). If a locked file is detected as being 'not up to date',
then the update would be recorded as "Needed".

My best suggestion:
How do I apply updates to my Terminal Server using WSUS?

Well, actually, you do. OE is a integral installed component of IE6.

> The only thing that exists is the outlook express folder in program files.

Uh huh... so, are you telling me that somebody just purged the \Program
Files\Outlook Express folder, and considered the application "uninstalled"?
That could *certainly* account for an update being detected, but failing in
the manner you've reported.

I wouldn't be surprised at all!

Especially if the program wasn't uninstalled by using an appropriate
UNINSTALL method.

Re: Problem Installing KB929123
"JT" <no[ at ]mail.here> 6/22/2007 12:11:44 PM
Thanks Lawernce,

This is the first update we have ever had a problem with in our TS and
Citrix environment. It *was* pointed out that the servers were restarted
after the patch update and tried in both user and execute mode with a
restart after each.

As for outlook express not being uninstalled correctly that unfortunetly is
not something I had control over at the time it was done so I cant blame
myself and whats done is done. I need a resolution to working around this
issue. I would just assume reinstall it but I dont see the option to do as
such with windows 2003 R2.

Likewise, I have ensured multiple times that yes, the correct patches are in
fact being installed for the target OS, its the one for windows 2003 servers
and NOT the intanium version either. I would figure that if the correct
patches were not specified they would not have downloaded to the servers at
all anyways and then be asking to be installed, but Im no expert on the
subject, obviously.

Any guidance going forward to resolve this would be appreciated. Is it
possible to block that specific update on wsus and somehow delete the wsus
cataloge on each server and have it redect installed and required patches.
This should then eliminate it seeing the need for this patch to be installed
at all..or at least not say its required.

PS.

That link was helpful but did not provide me the answers I needed.

Thanks

Unfortunately it may be that the only full solution is to reinstall the
operating system. Obviously you'll want to leave that for a last resort, but I
just wanted to make it clear that the problem is serious and might not be easily
fixable.

You could try installing another server and copying the missing files over.
There's an outside chance this will work.

Does anybody know whether IE7 comes with a newer version of OE? I guess it
doesn't as I haven't heard anything about it.

Or, if the inability to install an OE patch is the only symptom you're
experiencing, you could just not worry about that particular patch. As long as
nobody is using OE it probably won't really matter. You know you can hide an
update using the update agent dialog, yes?

Harry.

I know. The answer is: It does not. IE7 installs on Win2003/WinXP and
continues to use the installed version of OE6SPx.

On Vista the new "OE" is Windows Mail, but it's no longer integrated with
Internet Explorer.

That would be my take on the deal. Heck, I generally don't even approve OE
updates for my servers.

HI Guys,

Thanks for the suggestion. I had in fact tried simply not allowing the
update as well but if you noticed in my post, the update has been downloaded
to the servers and even after I had declined and hidden the update in wsus
the install dialogue still keeps popping up on the servers to which this
patch had already been downloaded. This is even after a restart and and a
redection cycle. Im not sure where to delete to the downloaded patches
repository and catalog file specifiying what updates the server says it
needs. I am guessing this is what has to be done in this case?

On the WSUS server, or on the client? It isn't entirely clear, but it sounds as
if you're talking about the settings for this update on the WSUS server. You
need to tell the *client* not to install the update, by clicking on the Windows
Update taskbar icon and choosing Custom Install. It should offer to hide the
updates you have chosen not to install; this is permanent unless explicitly
revoked using the Windows Update control panel.

If after telling Windows Update (on the client) to hide the patch it still tries
to do so, there's something seriously broken, or perhaps some other software
interfering with the process. Post the part of WindowsUpdate.log covering the
period in which you hid the update through to the point where it reappeared.

Harry.
